California considers asking residents to voluntarily pay tax on every mile they drive

The California legislature is considering a voluntary program to ‘tax’ every mile residents drive in order to replace state revenue being lost due to a more frequent use of high miles per gallon vehicles.

The program would reflect similar models used in Washington State and Oregon.

“We want to do as Washington and Oregon have done in a much bigger state with much longer commutes…to make sure that we find out whether it would work, whether the public would like it or not,” Californian Senator Mark DeSaulnier told CBS Los Angeles.

Desaulnier, when he says “like it or not”, is referring to a mandatory tax on miles driven that would replace the gas tax inside the state. The state of California has placed the blame on the use of hybrid and electric cars for decreasing revenue brought in by the gas tax.

People inside California do not seem to be on board with the idea.

“I bought a hybrid…one, because of my drive. I’m very opposed. I drive to Brentwood every day from Burbank, and I am already paying more than I should be,” one Californian told KCAL9.

“So if we go on vacation and I drive up to Mammoth, that’s 600 miles. We’re being taxed on vacations?” another resident complained.

It is not yet known how much the tax would cost motorists.

They do already...It's called a gas tax.

I think NYS still wins with the highest combo of state and fed taxes on gas.

Here’s an opportunity for all those rich liberals in Hollywood and Silicon Valley to put their money where their mouths are.

Never happen, though.

Taxes are for the little people who work every day to eedk out a middle-class living.

Yeah, my state asks you to voluntarily pay all your sales taxes on internet purchases. They even give you the option to estimate based on your income.

My entry in the little box? $0.

We’re rapidly getting to the point where the State wrings every last drop of our essence out until we are enslaved or we revolt.

“He has erected a multitude of New Offices, and sent hither swarms of Officers to harrass our people, and eat out their substance.”

I think NYS wins the highest tax burden of any state in all tax categories.

I feel for any FReepers that live in Kalifornia. They’ve exported many Kalifornians to Colorado because they couldn’t find work and look what they’ve done to the state. This isn’t just something I’ve read; this is from people I know who live there as well. They’ve said Kalifornia has ruined their state. I suspect the drug trade there has many Kalifornia connections.

“I really want to pay more taxes”

Said no one ever.

“Voluntary” = We hope this will shut all of you up while we put the infrastructure in place. Then next year there will be a financial crisis and we will “temporarily” make the per-mile tax mandatory.

Forever.

Hey... here’s an idea California... put some collection boxes on the outbound lanes of the highways near the state border.
That way, people can pay your silly mileage tax on their way out of the state.
You could stand to make a real killing!

Well, one has to consider the states overwhelming votes RAT so they may be gullible enough to just do it! Or, since they are stupid enough to elect RATs, the RATs feel they will do it if they ask nicely.

I’d voluntarily not pay any taxes.

This stupid scheme is about getting it on the books so, years later, they can simply proclaim the law was already passed and “the time seems appropriate, in light of the states needs, children’s imperatives and as an expression that recognizes our glowBull responsibility to mitigate the harmful effects of O2 and our role in poisoning mother earth”

The liberals from NY are a like a virus, destroying their host state with socialist policies, then moving on to a new "host" to repeat the cycle (VT, CA, South FL, etc).

As a corollary, they are insane, since they expect different results from repeated behaviors.

Yup. It will be “settled law”.

That’s right - vote in Sacramento, which is 2 miles in diameter, to punish LA, which has very long commutes and is spread out. Oh, it’s voluntary? You bet the LA drivers will chip in. not

New Yorkers have gone to Colorado. Bloomberg and his gazillions are the anti-Second crowd there in Denver.
