Police in Hearne, Texas shot a 93-year-old woman, yesterday (May 6th) after responding to a call about a female with a gun. The woman, identified by KBTX-TV as Pearlie Golden was allegedly carrying a firearm and was ultimately shot by Hearne Police Officer Stephen Stem.

According to a KAGS-TV report, the Robertson County District Attorney, Coty Siegert said in a statement, “Hearne Police Officers responded to a call Tuesday evening regarding a lady brandishing a firearm. Upon reaching the scene, Officer Stephen Stem located Miss Pearlie Golden, a 93 year old Hearne Resident, and confirmed that she did have a firearm. Officer Stem engaged the elderly female asking her to put down the weapon and then ultimately firing his own sidearm wounding Miss Golden who later died at St Joseph's Hospital.”

I’m sure we can take the officers “word” for it.

It's called Death by Cop. A person goes out with a knife or a gun and either verbalizes or acts out a threat.

When they do that it sets a chain of events in motion which may or may not have a good outcome. If it is immediate and aggressive, the police have few options. If it is not immediate and the police can get negotiations started, it may have a better outcome.

The story gives little to go on as is typically of our modern sensationalist press.

Oh, for God’s sake-the cops should have never been called-if she wouldn’t give the nephew the keys to the car, he should have just disabled the car-not like there aren’t enough ways to do that-she’d have given up on the notion of driving soon enough.

I hope the rest of the family sues the stupid nephew-mine certainly would...

I don't know if you've noticed, but more and more cops are declaring anything that frightens them an "immediate" threat and simply blowing people away.

Police "negotiations" are SO 20th century. Try to keep up.

I don’t think that particular photo helps your cause. If that is what I come upon, if you don’t shoot me first I think you are toast.

My thought would be to retreat, then have a friend or family member come over to the house and watch for an opportunity to take the gun from her.

In fairness, the officer may only be doing what he was trained to do.

Exactly, pull one of the battery cables. Or just leave her alone until she falls asleep, then take the keys, and the gun while you're at it. At her age, she's probably sleep more than she's awake.

The Devil is always in the details. A 93-year-old can shoot you just as dead as a 17-year-old. I would tend to put more onus on the LEO than the LOL, if for no other reason than he’s younger, trained, more coherent, and more in control of the situation.

Unless she was actively bustin’ caps, probably no reason he couldn’t have come up with something better than banging away at her. But then again, it’s the details that don’t make it into the story.

Indeed-the nephew was not thinking, and from the article, it appears the cop should never have been allowed to go on a call of any kind outside the station-he appears to have low tolerance for human beings.

Just disabling the car, then getting the rest of the family in for an intervention would probably have done just fine-it works for addiction and bad behavior...

“sleep more than she’s awake”

Don’t ever bet on that-the guy that owns the local flea market is 92, the two ladies who own the nearby antique shop are 90 and 96, and that isn’t uncommon out here-most country people have worked hard all their lives, and have no intention of stopping...

“Lots of officers never fire their firearm at a suspect their whole career.”

Yes, good point, including tens of thousands who work in NYC, LA, Chi-town and other places far more populous and dangerous than Hearne, TX which I have never heard of ere now.

I’m pretty sure they’re not going to sue him, but for shizzle they are going to sue the cop and the Police Department, whose tab will be paid by the taxpayers.
