Check this out: A police officer in Sumter, South Carolina goes beyond his call-of-duty to help out an upset teenager in need.
"My heart went out for him."
13-year-old Cameron Simmons called Sumter Police a few weeks ago. He was upset after fighting with his mom, and told the police he didn't want to live there anymore. Officer Gaetano Acerra responded to his call.
"I said you have it good. You have a roof over your head... and I told him that I'd try to help him out."
"I thought the little things he needed, I could give him to make, you know, him a happier kid."
The Sumter Police Department posted a photo of the two hugging in front of Cameron's home. The post read:
"He saw that a young boy was sleeping on a floor because he didn't have a bed, and did his homework there as well. The officer decided to get this young man a bed to sleep on, a desk to do his homework, and a Wii to have some fun."
Acerra has been getting a lot of attention for this deed, and says he didn't do it for publicity.
"I did it because I could, and it was the right thing to do."

I believe that there have been several people who have posted that it’s the few 90% that make the 10% look bad...
You can accomplish wondrous things if you are not interested in taking credit.
He’s dressed like the cops I knew and respected growing up. That probably has a lot to do with it. He’s not wearing some faggy idea of what a storm trooper douche should look like.
Take your false accusations of FReepeers elsewhere noob.
Exceptions prove the rule.
Many here that know and knew cops. In the past police were much different, more respectful and much more professional. It's the new generation of police that has lost our respect. This guy seems to be a throwback. Nice to see.
Indeed, we don’t “hate cops”, we hate abuse of authority by agents of the government, because they can legally kill you, and therefore must be under higher scrutiny than the sub shop worker.
There are probably a few cop haters on FR, but most of us just deplore the horrendous murders and attacks by police, and the amount growing all the time. It’s just like someone like you to pretend it’s just hate that makes us post those incidences. It’s not us, it’s the LEOs that are doing the killing that makes us post the stories.
I’m glad for this story and wish there were more LEOs that acted like this.
This is an example of an officer trying to make his community better. That’s what we pay them to do and this officer took that idea far beyond the call of duty. He is to be commended.
I only despise jack booted thugs. This guy is an honorable man.
Has the Wii been pawned?
There are NO Cop-haters in FR- only jack-booted-thug haters who are carrying out the orders of the new Nazi SS
“I know there are many cop haters on FR, sorry this doesn’t fit your stereotypes.”
I don’t think it’s “cop hating” as that’s too simplistic. Individuals are often great. But the way they’re trained and recruited lacks. The average cop twenty years ago was competent and also very human. I think the standards have gone down hill. I never heard of a cop twenty years ago shooting a dog. Granted there are more “news” channels now. But still, I can’t imagine the cops of twenty years ago either shooting a dog or somebody who wasn’t directly threatening their life.
I’ve written before about the elderly couple renting from me. Three deputies had come to calm them down and then put them to bed. Then twelve of them arrived at 2:00 am with an armored vehicle and broke down MY door because the three deputies had spotted 48 10’’ pot plants. This was unnecessary violence and damage. Why didn’t they just arrest these two drunks when it was three deputies against two people so drunk they were falling down?
This is just one example among hundreds of how policing has changed from policing to intimidation and (as far as tickets go) revenue raising.
I appreciate the police who do a very tough job with compassion. But the bad apples don’t seem to get punished.
As far as shooting dogs go, the cops I’ve seen have pepper spray and tasers. Why do they shoot dogs?
Awesome cop..!
Thanks for posting this. And you’re right — there are plenty of cop haters on this site.
Oh yeah, it’s all about people hating cops, not about the cops abusing and often murdering people, sometimes in their own homes.
