A nine-year-old Portland girl was handcuffed and arrested after engaging in a small feud with another girl. She was treated like a criminal and even detained at a police station.
The little girls got into a fight because one had told on the other for drawing on a desk. The girls eventually apologized to each other, and Harris was suspended from the club for one week.
But that wasnt enough for the mother of the other girl, who also called the police. Six days later, cops showed up to question Harriss daughter. They found her statements to be inconsistent, and promptly placed her under arrest. She was wearing a bathing suit at the time, and it isnt clear whether she was allowed to change before being carted off downtown.
Harriss request to accompany her nine-year-old daughter to the station was denied. She took the bus to get there as quickly as she could.
At the station, the girl received a mugshot, was fingerprinted and placed in holding. An hour later, she was released. She was never charged with a crime.
Police defended the treatment of Harris as unusual, but necessary. Suspects are always handcuffed to ensure officer safety.

Common sense isn’t very common any more
...Because a police state is a safe state.
I hope she sues, then her little girl can go to college or start her own business when she grows up.
Never, ever, let your child talk to a LEO if they are the target of an investigation. Never. Call an attorney. There is never an upside and always a big downside.
Now, now, now... You can’t blame those cops for being cautious.
I mean, there are NUMEROUS, documented cases of homicidal nine-year old girls LOSING It and taking out Blue Heroes all across the country, most often with an Assault Barbie Doll, but increasingly with High-Capacity Ken Dolls, too.
The officer “just wants to go home at the end of the day, like anyone else”...
...He’s just “doing his job”, after all... He “doesn’t like it, but it’s his job”...
... and it’s “for her own and the officer’s safety”, after all.
You’re just being unreasonable - and potentially hostile...
I doubt she could find any competant counsel willing to take such a case on a contingency basis. And if a lawlyer isn't will to invest his time in a case then you shouldn't be willing to invest your money.
It’s getting worse and worse all over the Country...
This has GOT to be “humor.”
Seriously. Tell me this did not actually happen.
Hopefully the little girl has those opportunities without having to go through this.
They had already apologized and she was banned for a week, this was already properly resolved!!!
If they used the same amount of energy to catch real criminals and ILLEGALS we would be in a lot better shape.
What a pathetic lot LEO’s have become. Just pathetic.
EXCUSE ME? They would have to taze me unconscious before they took my 9 yr old anywhere!
Where is the "rest of the story"?!?! This is insane.
Hysterical mothers try to shelter their kids from any little thing instead of teaching them how to deal with situations in the real world.
When she grows up, it will be to an assignment at worker collective #32435.
Many years ago when my daughter was a freshman she and a couple of other kids in the neighborhood got into an argument with a girl the same age that lived around the corner from us. From what all the kids told me it was no big deal but after it happened the girls crazy mother called the cops and told them my daughter had pulled a knife on her daughter. A hostile policeman showed up at my door to talk with my daughter. I could tell right off that he had already decided she was guilty. She wasn’t home and I told him so. He told me he wanted to come in and check. I told him to get a warrant and to get off my property. He threatened me with arrest but eventually got in his car. I called my neighbor who lived behind me since that is where daughter was and told them to keep my daughter in the house. He drove around the neighborhood asking every kid he saw if they knew her and knew where she was. Eventually he just left and we never heard anything about it again.
I went down to the police station the next day and filed a complaint against him but never heard anything about it.
There were other instances when the police were called by crazy parents on other kids in the neighborhood for no reason so I had learned my lesson and told daughter to never ever speak to anyone.
This country is GONE.
Handcuff MY kid and you can kiss your safety goodbye.
