Does anyone here remember R.Budd Dwyer, the politician who committed suicide on national TV during a press conference?

Not the most powerful, but close. Dirty Harry carried a .44 magnum, considerably more powerful than .357 magnum, and there is a .41 magnum, and now, some even bigger, like .454 Casull and some .50 caliber rounds.

All that said, .357 is quite a handful.

I remember it. Didn’t it have to do with awarding computer contracts. I lived in PA at the time.

What year did it happen?

1987. I was home with the flu and saw it live.

Dwyer was convicted of accepting a bribe from a California firm being considered for a contract to correct errors in federal withholding for state employees.

There is no need for honor anymore. Today, someone like Dwyer would keep the appeals going while serving in office....then, he would retire with full pension and cut a plea deal.

Back then, prosecutors were tenacious tigers who protected the public from political malfeasance.

Today, those prosecutors are looking for a seat at the table of power, so cutting a deal, going lenient or mishandling the case earn points with the political party machine that can be used for political office later on.

I was in Harrisburg at the time. WGAL showed the entire event.

There was a strategy in play. This happened on Super Bowl Sunday(da Bears). Dwyer had just been convicted in court of some malfeasance. He had not been sentenced but I believe that was to happen the following day. Once sentenced, his state pension and other benefits would be lost to him and his family.

Bud shot himself that Sunday so that he could not be sentenced. The state went after his pension anyway and the courts have ruled that since he was never sentenced that the family could still receive his pension and other benefits.

That was some bleed-out. A must see for anyone contemplating the same with a large caliber weapon.

I made the mistake of choosing to watch it.
Not a Sunday morning video.

Yah,saw a video on youtube of his demise.Didn't read up on the case so there's no way for me to know if there was politics involved.Gruesome for sure...but then violent death usually is.

I remember when this happened. He was charged with some type of wrong doing (don’t remember the specific charge, but if I recall correctly, it was not that serious.) He called a press conference in which he rambled for several minutes, was visibly upset, then reached into a bag, pulled out a gun, and shot himself. It’s not a video you would want to see.

Yes I had the misfortune to see it live. Gave me nightmares for days afterwards.

I don’t remember it, but I heard about it through Filter, and then saw the video. Nasty, but people should see what death looks like.

I was on duty, working in the media on January 22, 1987. There was a snowstorm that day to boot.

What an awful thing. The television stations did some editing but there was plenty of criticism about showing it in the middle of the day with kids home from school because of the snow.

As a Pennsylvanian, the Budd Dwyer Case is an illustration of the pandemic of corruption in the political system of Pennsylvania that continues to this day.

When I go to vote in the primary on May 20th I will have that in mind in not supporting my corrupt Republican Governor Tom Corbett who is buying his re-election with a 28 cent a gallon gas tax hike to support highway and bridge construction companies, mass transit companies and unionized workers who will all give some of the money back in campaign gifts to politicians like him.

I writing in a name for governor when I vote. Bob Guzzardi.

Not the most powerful handgun, but more than sufficient for his purpose.

Hmm. I believe you are correct on the Dan Wesson. Ventilated rib on the barrel and the frame does look a little small for an N frame S&W.

I would imagine.

I wonder how many of the people who witnessed it sought out therapy. I know I would have needed to.

I’ve already seen it.

I can’t believe the cameraman zoomed in on it. But that’s the media for you. They don’t care.
