Sad News - Patricia Petty: Patricia Petty, wife of Maurice Petty and sister-in-law to Richard Petty, passed away Sunday, May 11. Richard Petty offered the following statement: “We all love Patricia. She was another cornerstone in the Petty family and was always there for Maurice and allowed us to do what we loved to do. She was just another special part of the family. We’ll miss her and give our love and support to Maurice and his family at this time.”(Richard Petty Motorsport)(5-12-2014)

Sad News - Wilbur Rakestraw: In the early years of stock car racing, Wilbur Rakestraw of Paulding County (GA) was one of the stars of Atlanta-area tracks such as Lakewood Speedway and the Dallas Speed Bowl. He also was well-known on the NASCAR circuit now known as Sprint Cup and on NASCAR’s old Convertible Series. Rakestraw, who died Wednesday at age 85 of congestive heart failure, was among the drivers who made the transition from the old beach course at Daytona to the 2.5-mile Daytona International Speedway. He ran the first three Daytona 500s as well as the first race at the track now known at Atlanta Motor Speedway, finishing 11th. Rakestraw ran 30 points-paying races in the Cup Series and 11 in Convertibles. But his best performance came in a non-points event at Daytona International Speedway in 1961 in which he finished second to Junior Johnson and just ahead of Fred Lorenzen (Atlanta Journal Constitution), service info coming at ClarkFuneralHome.comno info on services yet.(5-9-2014)

Eligibility Criteria for the 2014 Sprint All-Star Race & Showdown

Sprint Fan Vote continues:

It’s time again for fans to vote their favorite Sprint Fan Vote-eligible driver into the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race on Saturday, May 17 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. Voting opened March 16 and closes at 7:00pm/et on Friday, May 16, one day before the green flag. Through the Sprint Fan Vote, fans can cast their ballots an unlimited number of times to help determine the starting lineup for the prestigious race. The driver receiving the highest number of votes will earn a starting spot in the annual event worth a $1 million payday, courtesy of Sprint. For the first time in its history, the Sprint Fan Vote will include a sweepstakes awarding one lucky voter a trip for two to any 2014 Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup race of his or her choice, among other instant prizes.

NASCAR fans have three options to cast their Sprint Fan Votes:

Download the NASCAR MOBILE application. Votes cast through NASCAR MOBILE will count as double towards a driver’s total.
Go to NASCAR.com/SprintFanVote
Visit The Sprint Experience, located in the midway at all NASCAR Sprint Cup Series races.
Last year, then-rookie #10-Danica Patrick, garnered nearly half-a-million votes to win the Sprint Fan Vote. Eligible for the vote again this year, Patrick will be vying for votes against the likes of #47-AJ Allmendinger, #15-Clint Bowyer, #17-Ricky Stenhouse Jr., and rookies, #3-Austin Dillon and #42-Kyle Larson.

The winner of the 2014 Sprint Fan Vote will be announced in Victory Lane after the conclusion of the Sprint Showdown on Friday, May 16. In addition to accumulating the most votes, a Sprint Fan Vote-eligible driver must also finish the Sprint Showdown qualifying race with a car in “raceable” condition (as determined by NASCAR Competition) to earn a spot in the race field.

To date, 30 drivers are eligible for the 2014 Sprint Fan Vote. Eligibility for participation is restricted to those drivers who have been approved by NASCAR for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition and have met all other eligibility requirements. Amongst those eligibility requirements, drivers must have attempted to qualify for the 2014 Daytona 500 and race in the Sprint Showdown. Should any eligible Sprint Fan Vote candidate win a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Race during the 2014 season, and therefore automatically earn a spot into the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, the driver’s name will be removed from the Sprint Fan Vote ballot and their existing votes will be voided.

Frontstretch tickets for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race are available for purchase and affordably priced at two for $99 (plus taxes and fees). Fans can obtain tickets by calling 1-800-455-FANS or buying online at CharlotteMotorSpeedway.com.

Tune in to the Sprint Showdown at 7:00pm/et on Friday, May 16 on FOX Sports 1, Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio. Then catch NASCAR’s biggest stars in Sprint All-Star Race Qualifying at 7:00pm/et on Saturday, May 17 on FOX Sports 1, and the Sprint All-Star Race immediately following at 9:00pm/et on FOX Sports 1, Motor Racing Network and SiriusXM NASCAR Radio.

Changes to the All-Star Race Schedule announced:

Charlotte Motor Speedway officials have announced changes to the May 16-17 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race schedule. During the second day of the NASCAR Sprint Media Tour hosted by Charlotte Motor Speedway, officials announced that the Sprint Showdown will be moved to Friday, May 16, preceding the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series’ North Carolina Education Lottery 200. Before the green flag falls on Saturday’s NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race, drivers will set the field for the main event with a three-lap qualifying that includes a mandatory four-tire pit stop and no pit road speed limit.

“These changes mean fans get even more bang for their buck here at The Greatest Place to See the Race,” said Marcus Smith, president and general manager of Charlotte Motor Speedway. “In addition to watching the trucks battle on Friday night and rocking with a pre-race concert with Jake Owen on Saturday, fans will be treated to back-to-back nights of Sprint Cup Series action as drivers leave everything on the track with a $1 million payday on the line.”

The schedule change means that fans can watch both NASCAR Sprint Cup Series drivers and NASCAR Camping World Truck Series drivers battle on Friday night, May 16. It is the only date on the NASCAR schedule where both truck and Sprint Cup drivers will compete in non-qualifying contests on the same night at the same venue.

Drivers already eligible to race in the 2014 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race include:

#48-Jimmie Johnson, #99-Carl Edwards, #20-Matt Kenseth, #5-Kasey Kahne, #18-Kyle Busch, #4-Kevin Harvick, #34-David Ragan, #14-Tony Stewart, #16-Greg Biffle, #78-Martin Truex Jr., #55-Brian Vickers, #31-Ryan Newman, #22-Joey Logano, #2-Brad Keselowski,#1- Jamie McMurray, #24-Jeff Gordon, #11-Denny Hamlin and #41-Kurt Busch.

Eligible drivers who win a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race prior to the Sprint All-Star Race will be added to the field as well as the top two finishers in Friday night’s Sprint Showdown and the Sprint Fan Vote winner.

Once the field is set, drivers and teams will turn their attention to the most highly-anticipated qualifying run of the season, a timed run of three laps including a mandatory four-tire pit stop with no pit road speed limit. With the new schedule, the Sprint Showdown winner and second place finisher as well as the Sprint Fan Vote winner will make qualifying runs.

All NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race ticket holders can also enjoy a free concert featuring country music mega star Jake Owen before the green flag falls on the winner-take-all $1 million dash for cash.

Tickets for Friday night’s double-header with the Sprint Showdown and the N.C. Education Lottery 200 start at just $25. Fans can catch all the action of the Sprint Showdown, N.C. Education Lottery 200, Sprint All-Star Race qualifying, the Jake Owen pre-race concert and the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race with weekend front stretch ticket packages starting at just $99. Just $10 down reserves a seat at The Greatest Place to See the Race, and interest-free payment plans are available. Call 1-800-455-FANS (3267) or visit www.charlottemotorspeedway.com for details.(CMS)(1-28-2014)

Dale Jarrett pushing Bristol for All-Star Race:

ESPN analyst Dale Jarrett is a public advocate of deeming Bristol Motor Speedway as the new venue for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. “Charlotte has been a great venue, and Atlanta that one year, but I think it’s time that we take it to a short track and let these drivers battle it out,” Jarrett said, winner of the 1997 Goody’s Headache Powder 500. “Short tracks are where every one of these drivers got their start. What better place to have the All-Star Race than action-packed Bristol. You have side-by-side racing; you have to know in your mind that if the drivers come here with that kind of money on the line, then they’re going to be willing to take out their best friend, just spin him and take the spot.”(Bluefield Daily Telegraph)(8-24-2013)

USUALLY.......to be eligible for the Sprint All-Star Fan Vote (and the Sprint Showdown), drivers must be approved by NASCAR for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competition and have met all other eligibility requirements. Those requirements include finishing in the Top 50 of the previous season NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship point standings; competing in a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series Championship Event during the current season; or attempting to qualify for the current season Daytona 500.

Sam Bass looking forward to return to track:

It’s not often that people find life at 200 mph to be calm, but after the year that Sam Bass has had, NASCAR’s first officially licensed artist looks forward to returning to his “status quo” life in the fast lane. After two near death experiences over the last three months, Bass plans to finally be back at the track debuting art for his 75th and 76th consecutive program covers at Charlotte Motor Speedway this month.

Excited for a new race season and busy upcoming year, Bass visited Elon University and Appalachian State University as a guest lecturer during the month of January. However, rather than making his usual February trek to NASCAR’s birthplace in Daytona Beach, Fla., Bass spent NASCAR’s Speedweeks fighting for his life as a previously undetected diabetic-related blood infection turned to septic shock. Four related surgeries within the time span of two and a half weeks took its toll. “It was very touch-and-go there for a bit,” commented Bass. “While the recovery process from losing more than 33% of the tissue in my left leg has been frustrating at times, for the first time in 90 days I am finally able to walk without crutches. Honestly, I’m just really happy to still be here.” With his recovery on track, Bass expects to return to his normal appearance and travel schedule beginning with the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series All-Star Race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.(Sam Bass PR)(5-10-2014)

Indy 500 practices underway for Kurt Busch:

The runs Kurt Busch had made up to Sunday in the #26 Suretone Honda for Andretti Autosport were solely single-car runs, where he had a chance to acclimate simply to the nature and handling of the lighter, less powerful IndyCar compared to the heavier, more brutal and higher horsepower NASCAR Sprint Cup Series car. Sunday marked Busch’s first chance to run in traffic, in dirty air, in a moment he appreciated. He banked 31 laps on the day, with his fastest on lap 29 of 220.352 mph good for P12 on the time sheets. “It was a nice rookie day to go play in traffic,” said the 2004 Sprint Cup champion. “The Andretti Autosport guys ramped up where we are with the levels, to get in dirty air. Today was a nice shakedown, and the second run was a baseline run. It was nice to have a champion, Ryan Hunter-Reay, take me around, and then with Munoz and E.J. Viso. It’s just neat to move to the next step, which is to go out there in dirty air and draft with teammates.” Busch described the difference of running in traffic in NASCAR versus traffic in IndyCar as “times 10,” in IndyCar, so he could easily catch the car in front of them. With less horsepower, it’s a lot to digest. Busch and the rest of the five-car Andretti Autosport effort resume practice on Monday.(NBC Sports)(5-12-2014)

#78 Team to feature Colorado Freedom Memorial on hood at Charlotte:

The Colorado Freedom Memorial is proud to announce that Denver-based Furniture Row Racing will be honoring generations of Colorado's fallen veterans when the #78 Chevy competes in the 55th Annual Coca-Cola 600 this Memorial Day Weekend, with only the Colorado Freedom Memorial logo emblazoned on its hood.

The Colorado Freedom Memorial (CFM) honors every fallen Colorado military veteran by name, from every branch of service and every conflict dating back to the Spanish American War in 1896. The Memorial, which is located in Aurora, is made up of glass panels on which nearly 6000 Colorado heroes are honored. "Donating the hood of our #78 Furniture Row Chevrolet SS to the Colorado Freedom Memorial is a small, but meaningful way that we can pay tribute to those who have offered the greatest sacrifice for our freedoms," said Furniture Row Racing Owner, Barney Visser. Visser, who is a Vietnam veteran, maintains a personal connection with the Colorado Freedom Memorial.

Prior to the May 25 race, The Furniture Row Chevrolet will be unveiled at an event open to the public at the Colorado Freedom Memorial on Tuesday, May 20 from 4 - 6 p.m. The Memorial is located across the street from Buckley Air Force Base at Aurora's Springhill Community Park: 756 Telluride St., Aurora, CO 80011. "The tribute by Furniture Row Racing to the fallen veterans from their home state of Colorado is wonderful," said Colorado Freedom Memorial Founder and President Rick Crandall. "Thousands of Colorado families will know their loss has not been forgotten on a weekend dedicated to their sacrifice." During the race in North Carolina on May 25, the Colorado Freedom Memorial will be hosting its annual dedication ceremony in Aurora, Colo.(FRR), see an image of the scheme on the #78 Team Schemes page.(5-14-2014)

Garry Hill profiled on WCNC:

Garry Hill wanted to be a racer but that didn't work, so he pursued his passion in another direction. Hill became a motorsports artist, capturing "victories" in racing by recording the sport's great moments and rich tradition. On Tuesday morning on WCNC's Larry's Look, they got an inside look at Hill's work (garryhill.com) in his studio near Lake Norman, NC. Garry's amazing prints chronicle the great history of NASCAR, showcasing some of the most amazing moments in the history of the sport. See full story and video at WCNC.(5-14-2014)

Parker Kligerman To Serve as Backup Driver for Kurt Busch:

Stewart-Haas Racing (SHR) has tabbed Parker Kligerman to serve as the backup driver for Kurt Busch in the #41 Haas Automation Chevrolet SS during the May 16-17 NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race and the May 22-25 Coca-Cola 600 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Kligerman has made 10 Sprint Cup starts, 51 NASCAR Nationwide Series starts, 50 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series starts and 23 ARCA Racing Series starts. The 23-year-old from Westport, Connecticut, earned a Camping World Truck Series victory in 2012 at Talladega and has nine ARCA wins, all of which came in 2009 when he finished second in the championship standings.

SHR selected Kligerman in the event that Busch, who is attempting to compete in the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on the same day, is unable to practice, qualify or potentially start his #41 Haas Automation Chevy due to a schedule conflict or logistical issue. “I’m grateful for the opportunity and want to thank everyone at Stewart-Haas Racing for entrusting me with the Haas Automation Chevy,” said Kligerman, who has competed in eight Sprint Cup races in 2014. “For these next two weeks, my sole focus is to help the #41 team compete at a high level, no matter how big or small my role might be.”

On May 25, Busch will compete in the Indianapolis 500 before getting on a plane and traveling to North Carolina to compete in the Coca-Cola 600. Practice for the Indianapolis 500 began May 11 and continues through May 16, with qualifying May 17 and Pole Day May 18. The May 16 practice at Indianapolis conflicts with practice for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race. And Indianapolis 500 qualifying on May 17 lasts until 6pm/et, which makes for a short turnaround time for Busch to be back at Charlotte in time for the 7:10 pm qualifying session for the NASCAR Sprint All-Star Race.

The Indianapolis 500 is scheduled to begin at 12:15 pm on May 25, with the Coca-Cola 600 set to get underway at 6:00pm. The Indianapolis 500 should be completed at approximately 3:30pm, allowing Busch two-and-a-half hours to get from Indianapolis Motor Speedway to Charlotte before the green flag waves for the Coca-Cola 600, the longest race on the Sprint Cup schedule. In the event Busch does not make it back to Charlotte on time, Kligerman will start the Coca-Cola 600. Upon Busch’s arrival, Kligerman will yield the seat of the #41 Haas Automation Chevy to Busch, whereupon Busch will finish the race [if Parker starts the Coke 600, he would get the drivers points and Busch would not].

“Parker and I were teammates a few years ago when we were together at Penske and his feedback was always really good,” Busch said. “Plus, we’re built about the same, and that’s really important as we don’t want to have to adjust seats or pedal positions inside the racecar. I’m confident in Parker’s abilities and know that my Haas Automation Chevrolet is in good hands.”(SHR)(5-14-2014)

Busch is running real good here at Indy.
He’s in an Andretti car and all of them are fast.
For a while yesterday he was in P2.

I don’t see how it could be H2O, it’s only the left one. Elevation makes no difference. Last 2 times I went to ER and they gave me 2 different antibiotics (at the same time) and a few pain pills. I’ve had gout before and it is not that- this starts in the ankle, gout has ALWAYS started in my big toe 1st then moved upwards.
