RACISM & ICE CREAM: NPR, ‘Buying Ice Cream From Ice Cream Truck Supports Racism’(language warning)
Clash Daily ^ | 5/13/14

EDITOR’S NOTE: This article is about a virulently racist song. Read no further if you wish to avoid racist imagery and slurs.

“Ni**er Love A Watermelon Ha! Ha! Ha!” merits the distinction of the most racist song title in America. Released in March 1916 by Columbia Records, it was written by actor Harry C. Browne and played on the familiar depiction of black people as mindless beasts of burden greedily devouring slices of watermelon.

I came across this gem while researching racial stereotypes. I was a bit conflicted on whether the song warranted a listen. Admittedly, though, beneath my righteous indignation, I was rather curious about how century-old, overt racism sounded and slightly amused by the farcical title. When I started the song, the music that tumbled from the speakers was that of the ever-recognizable jingle of the . (For the record, not all ice cream trucks play this same song, but a great many of them do.)

I guess they haven't seen the lyrics or titles of a lot of modern rap songs.

We could wish that rap was no worse than this.

I bet in the day of that song a lot of, well, Negro people were less self conscious in spite of the unfair treatment (due chiefly to Democrats, by the way) and would laugh along with a song like this. They knew the difference between kidding and reality. But they also knew God a lot better too. Funny the God (or “God”) that a lot are hoping will damn America is busy damning them too.

It amazes me how history is so often viewed through the enlightened glasses of today, rather than the lens of the time.

Interestingly, in Queens, their’s an Italian ices place called the Ice King of Corona, it’s shown in the beginning credits on the show King of Queens, that’s been around for ages. They have the best watermelon Italian ice. Corona is one of the most (damn I hate this word) diverse areas on the planet, yet no one ever complained, in fact oftentimes people line up around the block at this place.

I have heard it in Illinois. Anyhow, it seems even Giles is infected a bit with knee-jerk-itis. He didn’t mention the original tune which is older than this parody. Turkey In The Straw is a simple, merry song and that’s probably why its use predates this parody.

Anyhow it would be cool to have watermelon offered by ice cream trucks (needing a refrigerator compartment of course). It would get scarfed up by folks of all colors. But the food regulations of today would kill you.

that's the lyrics? Really? I thought the lyrics went like this:

Do your boobs hang low
Do they dangle to and fro
Can you tie them in a knot
Can you tie them in a bow
Can you throw them over your shoulder
Like a Continental soldier
Do your boobs hang low

A very long time ago, someone wrote some racist lyrics to a tune which had been around for an even longer time.

Now, according to NPR (and their race-baiting minions) anyone who uses the ORIGINAL tune for any purpose is a racist.

If the race-baiters have to go to these lengths to ‘find’ racism for our society, then only one conclusion can be drawn. there IS no racism in this country any more.

Ice cream trucks here are all run by immigrants and they fly by so fast I doubt they actually sell ice cream. Then they have no idea what music they`re playing. It`s not unusual to hear Jingle Bells or other Christmas music in 100degree July and August. Racism??? Ok..I`m not paying Middle Eastern types for overpriced ice cream.

I did learn one thing from the article, Harry Reid thinks that Barack 0bama is "Zip Coon".

Quickie research has Turkey in the Straw going back to 1860. But the tune goes back to Andrew Jackson, as "Ole Zip Coon".

To the tune of "Turkey in the Straw":

Racism here

Racism there

Racism almost everywhere

But there's one thing that's true, both near and far

There's nobody more racist than N P R.

I was always taught these lyrics to that tune:

"Well I had a little chicken and she wouldn't lay an egg.
So I poured hot water up and down her leg.
Oh the little chicken cried and the little chicken begged,
And the little chicken laid me a hard boiled egg!"

That is also noticeable in a some TV series that are set, for example, in the 1870s, but try to apply modern PC to them.

I watched one series via Netflix from Canada. It protrayed live in a boarding school out in the country. One of the later episodes was anti-gun. Anti-gun, out in the country, in the 1870s? Thankfully, not all of the characters were anti-gun and one guy had one hidden. It came in handy to fend off bandits.

If Theodore R. Johnson, III needs material for his next NPR piece, he should check out Life Magazine's August 27, 1965 issue, page 60 bottom, where there is a little item on a gun shop in Fern Park, Florida, offering a unique "guarantee" on one of their 12-gauge models.

How many people are alive today who would have possibly heard those 1916 racist lyrics and who would associate the tune to them? The tune for our national anthem was an 18th century English drinking song so does that make playing the Star Spangled Banner offensive to recovering alcoholics?
