Official: Conyers lacks signatures for ballot

DETROIT (AP) - Longtime Congressman John Conyers of Michigan doesn't have enough signatures to appear on the Aug. 5 primary ballot, an elections official announced Tuesday.

Conyers' nominating petitions were insufficient, Wayne County Clerk Cathy Garrett said in a statement.

It follows her report last week finding Conyers more than 400 signatures short of 1,000 needed. Garrett said Tuesday that he had 592 valid signatures after challenges.

The 84-year-old Detroit Democrat was at risk because officials believe several people who circulated his petitions do not appear to have been registered voters or had registered too late.

.......................

Federal court actions, meanwhile, are taking aim at the requirement that petition collectors be registered voters. The ACLU has filed suit to change state law. If neither happens, Conyers can run as a write-in. If he wins the primary as a write-in, he would qualify for the general election ballot.

Its official. If the barnacle wants to run he'll have to do it as a write in.

He'll be reelected in a write-in campaign.

He can still win as a write in. After all the current mayor was a write in candidate and he’s a white guy.

And how is this a problem with getting ballots printed? These are Democrats, people!

You are correct. Atlanta area congressional district specifically drawn to keep whites out. We used to think that Cynthia McKinney was the epitome of stupid but when I heard him make that statement to the Commandant from the Marine Corpse (sarcasm intended), he made her the equivalent of a rocket scientist.

What was more amazing is how the Commandant sat there with a stone face and actually gave a coherent answer without cracking up. I would have just lost it.

His closest election was him getting only 77% of the vote.

One illegal way or another, Conyers won’t leave Congress until he’s serving drinks to Teddy in the Kennedy Kompund in Hell

Let me speak for the election officers who now have to deal with thousands of write ins because the congressman cannot get his act together. Nobody thinks of the poor schlubs who are left copying by hand a few thousand variants of the write ins. What would be a normal close out of 30 minutes becomes hours, and that after a 13 hour day dealing with the entitled public.

I’m glad my father got off of Guam in ‘46, before it capsized; not only did it allow him another 50 years of life, it also gave him the opportunity to participate in the conception of his son.

Oh, I'm sure it won't be so hard. It'll be like Lisa Murkowski's write-ins, where pretty much anything was accepted...

"Yep! Another vote for Murkowski!"
