Initial police investigations into a downtown Savannah street fight on Saturday night appear not to support allegations by two Forsyth County men that they and their families suffered an unprovoked attack and beating.
The victims themselves may not be much help, as their retelling of the fracas — on Facebook, then on an Atlanta TV station and then to the Savannah Morning News — has changed since the event occurred.
Detectives on Tuesday released video of the River Street altercation in hope of identifying other participants so they can be interviewed as part of the ongoing investigation.

In a WSB-TV story originally titled “Family brutally attacked Mother’s Day weekend” online, Jim Thomas and his brother-in-law, Rob Gray, tell a reporter how they were attacked by a “mob” that pushed one of them into the side of a car, grabbed Thomas’ wife by her hair and punched his 6-year-old daughter in her stomach.

We all know what happened here, and the motivation.
The only thing to discuss is either the obtuseness of “officials” who are commenting on it, or their dishonesty in not acknowledging the truth.
Their first mistake was “saying” something to the folks who “bulled” their way through the family. We must learn to NEVER confront these types of people. NOT! Guess the family was just puttin’ their “privilege” on display.
There were in Eric Holder's peoples' part of town. That caused the brawl.
At the 1:45 mark of the video, notice the black guy wearing the red shirt who ran back to start the fight, take off his red shirt at the bottom of the frame. Why would he do that if not to be identified with it?
I am very familiar with that area, having lived in Savannah and visiting River Street many times.
Regardless of the details, the city absolutely cannot have it thought that there are random black on white beat downs going on there. It would be a disaster. That’s been considered one of the safest areas of the city. Without River Street as the “tourist anchor”, downtown is in trouble.
There are some big bucks in the resolution of this case. The city fathers don’t want potential tourists to be turned away out of fear of getting beaten to a pulp.
“There is the race ingredient here too, the beat up guys are white, the other group was black. Something smells bad here, looks like the city is trying its best to blame the victims.”
Sheesh...you think?
Unfortunately, Savannah is a cesspool in dire need of a few smoke bombs to clear everything. Wife & I went there with our 2 month old for an extended weekend last fall.
We’ll never return.
Yep, that’s gotta be a dilemma for them - if they crack down on the beat downs, then they’ll be acting against something the actually want to happen,
but if they don’t do it, it threatens their revenue stream.
River Street isn't a black area.
Isn’t that how it works? When there’s a crime, look for the nearest White male to blame.
He doesn’t want his opponent to be able to pull the red shirt over his head.
