Sitka newcomer watches helplessly as bear devours dog
The Anchorage Daily News ^ | May 14, 2014 | LAUREL ANDREWS

Paco, a 2-year-old Chihuahua-pug mix, was killed and eaten by a brown bear as Sitka resident Paula Myers watched in horror just a few feet away on Monday. Paula Myers never imagined that her first bear encounter would occur just a few feet from her Sitka home, and that her dog, 2-year-old Chihuahua-pug mix Paco, would be killed and consumed by a brown bear right in front of her eyes. Myers and her husband, Brad Langdorf, moved to Sitka in January to work at Southeast Alaska Regional Health Consortium. Coming to Alaska was a new adventure for the couple, Myers said. "I had not seen a bear yet," Myers said Wednesday. "I had no idea it would be 5 feet from my house, eating my dog."

If a bear didn’t get that little bitty “dog”, the Eagles would have.

That happens out here sometimes, too-small dogs and small cats are best kept indoors-Red tailed hawks and those grayish ones get pretty big, and they live in the trees right on the other side of the fence, and the owls come out at dusk...

A few years back, a golden eagle spiraled down to snatch up my 20-odd pound Portuguese Podengo Medio.

Bald eagles are big birds.

Golden eagles make bald eagles look like small birds.

You see a chihuahua-pug.

Smokey sees a noisy, feisty snack.

Here in Connecticut, the problem is coyotes, hawks and owls.

A coyote attacked my neigbor’s dog last month. Not a small dog either, I think it is a lab.

The dog lived, but is traumatized.

So? You wanted an adventure? You got one.

I wonder how many guns they had on hand yesterday?
I wonder how many they have on hand today...

She bought a shotgun, found the revolver that had been packed away, and moved the chickens into a dry cabin on the property.

Well at least they kinda learnt, though I doubt a shotgun will be as effective against the bear as she's hoping. You need some with more penetrative power. Hopefully they learnt their lesson and won't ever buy a rat again.

Must’ve been a big chihuahua (from the pug) to make a meal.

Story was obviously written by a non cullinary expert. the chihuahua was nothing but an Hors d'oeuvre

They need an IRISH WOLFHOUND. The bear will do a 180 in a hurry.

Everyone needs an IW (and those who have owned one will know why I say that). My last one was the friendliest creature God ever made. I only saw him angered once - he was sneak-attacked by a Labrador. After being knocked off-balance by the attack (and having the soft tissue of his nose cut), the IW regained his balance, led with his shoulder, flattened the Lab, and within 2-3 seconds had the Lab in full submission pose and was standing over him threatening with the ugliest growl you have ever heard. I, the Lab and the IW knew that if the Lab made one wrong move, he was dead. I told my friends to imagine the turn-around here, imagine that I walked up behind Mike Tyson and sucker-punched him. From that point on, I have never under-estimated the lethality of an IW. Anything that was bred to chase down and kill a wolf one-on-one has immense capabilities.

However, the fiercest IW that has ever walked would stand no chance again an adult Alaska Brown Bear in a one-on-one fight. A determined pack of IWs could but even then the IW pack would take casualties.

The giants are usually the sweetest. My wife who grooms professionally says that among the friendliest clients are two St Bernards, and A Newfie.

A pair of wolfhounds are a formidable thing.

They’re a bit too big for me, I prefer 2 coonhounds, they’ll do too for bear and whatnot, and have the added advantage of making sure your neighbors hate you lol.
