Top 5 Most Overrated Athletes

It’s difficult to judge an athlete’s true worth, even if on paper it’s clear they’re either a mega-loser or a mega-winner. But once you go beyond the stats and sabermetrics, and really take a look at what they’ve done, you inch a little closer to uncovering their true value.

In the cases of these five, we found a whole lot of nothing. These are some of the most overrated performers we’ve ever seen, and they should probably pay back all the money they’ve earned and go work at a Walgreens or something. Or CVS, if they prefer. We’re not picky.

5. Wilt Chamberlain

...

Unfortunately, outside of a plethora of women’s phone numbers, he rarely won anything significant. In basketball, the ultimate team sport, Wilt was seen as a bad teammate, somebody who cared more about HIS shots and HIS stats than helping his team win rings. He won two titles, though given his gaudy numbers, plus the fact that his teams made the playoffs every single year he played save one, he really should’ve won more.

...

4. Danica Patrick

...

Here’s the issue: she’s never won. It’s not just that she’s never won a Sprint Cup — plenty of people have never done that. It’s more that, with the exception of ONE RACE back in 2008, she’s never won anything. She’s started over 230 races and won one. She rarely even finishes in the top ten. For somebody touted as a super-duper star, that’s pretty pathetic.

...

3. Deion Sanders

...

2. Dennis Rodman

...

1. Alex Rodriguez

...

Perhaps in his pro career; but as an Ohio State fan, believe me, we think there was nothing overrated about old Elvis after he shellacked us for That School Up North several times in the nineties.

He writes of Wilt:

But he cared only for his stats — if given the choice between shooting a layup and losing the game, or passing to somebody in three-point range so they could shoot and WIN, he’d almost certainly take the former.

What a moron!!!! This guy knows nothing.

I am going to dissent on Rodman. Forgetting about his crazyness, he was the main reason the Pistons won their titles, he revolutionized the game with his mastery of rebounding and his defense.

A lot of people argue Wilt Chamberlain was the greatest player ever. Apparently he had two championships, is the argument that he “should have” won more really valid?

I always thought his height was the whole story but he has a lot of supporters.

Rodman doesn't belong anywhere close to the top 5 or top 100.

Everyone knew what they were getting with Rodman - great defense, great rebounding & zero offense.

No one disputes that so how is he "overrated"?

You’d add Tiger Woods to the list of most overrated athletes? In an off year, last year, he still won six events. He hasn’t won a major in a while, but he’s got, what, 15 so far?

I admit to being an apologist, but its because I’ve seen him do things even legendary golfers have never done. Winning a major on a broken leg, for example.

Is it wrong to disagree on Danica being on the list after seeing that photo?

A friend encountered Wilt Chamberlain on a plane. Chamberlain was rude to him.My friend was a young Air Force Lieutenant and felt bad about it. Chamberlain had had a bad day at work.

Can't agree about A-Rod. He is a jerk but a talented jerk.

A-Rod does squat when it matters.

Like when he played for the Rangers, he only started to hit well long after the Rangers were already out of contention.

I'm going to agree with you on Rodman. Rodman wasn't much of a scorer but he was a great rebounder and defensive player. He was also a hard worker back in the day. Phil Jackson said Rodman learned the triangle offensive faster than any player he ever coached.

Chamberlain changed the way basketball was played. Only 2 titles? Great players go entire careers with a title. In Wilt’s case, having West, Goodrich, Baylor and Hairston didn’t hurt him. Question I always ask is if Wilt played on the 1978 Knicks, would he have made a difference?

Which brings up my number 1 pick.

Scottie Pippen. Jordan made him better. When Jordan left, Scottie stunk up the joint. He was the Larry Kenon of the NBA. Who is Larry Kenon you ask? He was Dr J’s sidekick when they played for the Nets of the ABA.

A Rod is a difficult one. Then again I was going to say Sammy Sosa.
