Sacramento man sentenced to prison for beating dogs, threatening roommate

A Sacramento man accused of beating, choking and hanging his pet dogs has been sentenced to 15 years and six months in prison.

A jury in March convicted Robert Lee Brian, 49, of three counts of felony animal cruelty, one count of assault and one count of criminal threat. He was sentenced Friday by Sacramento Superior Court Judge Steve White.

Brian was arrested Oct. 7, 2013, for assaulting and threatening to shoot a female roommate after an early morning argument. After his arrest, Sacramento County Animal Care and Regulation received multiple complaints regarding the condition of Brian’s male pit bull terrier, Bubba. On Oct. 8, the dog was impounded and immediately transported for treatment. Authorities said the dog had suffered a fractured skull and snout, and trauma to the right eye and face. He also had a massive infection and possible chemical burns.

He sounds like a violent individual acting out and then issuing threats against a fellow human. I think the penalty for crimes against the dog is too severe one year being more appropriate. However, addition of threats against a human coupled with the acting out maybe 15 years is not inappropriate.
