The episode a year or two ago where they were lost in the mountains of Kentucky or Tennessee in what looked like the Cumberland river area I had to laugh. They found an old still with a plastic tarp. To operate a still you have to have a accessible {but out of the way} area to move the supplies in and out. IOW they were within probably an eighth of a mile from an old logging or mining road out had they simply looked. Instead they went back down the mountain and got in a make shift tarp/duct tape canoe.

Seriously the top of the ridge especially at night will sow you a way out like a distant house light, road with headlights, etc.

As for actual knowledge? Cody seems to have the most overall knowledge and skill for all conditions. However the barefoot stuff is an unnecessary risk. You do not expose yourself to unnecessary risk like that conditioning or no.

It's all staged and the people in all these type shows have a support team. IOW while Jim is wrestling the Python I'll be back at camp having a steak LOL.

“Survivorman” is probably the most sensible and least staged. Bear Grylls’ show got ridiculous; it seemed to be mostly a venue for him to eat outrageous stuff (and sometimes get sick from doing it) and take other unnecessary risks.
