Word For The Day, Tuesday May 20, 2014
In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
a fabulous creature resembling a griffin but having the body and hind parts of a horse.
[ 164555; earlier hippogryph, Latinized < Italian ippogrifo. See hippo-, griffin1 ]
la oruga [ohr-OO-gah]
Hay una oruga en esa hoja.
Theres a caterpillar on that leaf.
Do not confuse today’s word with that other mythical creature, half elephant, half rhinoceros: the elephino.
Now, set your (Fast)Wayback machines to 1983 and kick out the jams:
Democrats were quick to bring up the age of republican candidates Ronald Reagan, Bob Dole, and John McCain, but any mention of Hillary’s age is strictly prohibited. Bunch of hippogriffs!
Hola. Buenos dias.
Una oruga azure.
Yeah, that’s what I meant. Or is it verde?
That is one of those shades that caused fistfights in my family growing up. Well, not fistfights, but heated disagreements.
you mean bluish-greenish. or teal.
Obama came riding in on his hippogriff to save America, but it was only a horse’s ass.
Yes, we would have arguments about whether blue-green items were blue or green. Good times.
The drugs just wore off.
Isn’t irony ironic?
Police are looking for a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 20-year-old man from McKeesport. Allegheny County homicide detectives say the victim, Tezjuan Taylor, of McKeesport, was hit with a shotgun blast near Rays Double Barrel Bar around 1:30 a.m.
like a free ride when you’ve already paid. ; )
did i tell you what we are doing for placecard holders for the wedding? xsteen wanted, and they found a place that does them, a puck with a cut in it to put the card in which will have the guest’s name and table number on it. The puck will be custom designed with their initials, the flyers and caps logos and at the bottom it will say official wedding puck, the date and the location.
The large woman took me for everything I was worth. She was part of a band of hippogrifters passing through town.
Luckily there is no rain in the forecast for Saturday
I think you mentioned pucks before, but not in so much detail. It’s pretty cool.
A little bit of rain on your wedding day is good luck. At least that’s what they say in climates where it rains. ;-)
We had a little shower on my wedding day after we had gotten to the church and before we left.
I have a picture of us next to my dad’s old T-bird and there are beads of water on the car, adding a nice effect.
Oh, yeah. If you ever wanted, like, a pool table or a boat or something, you better buy it now! ;-)
the affianced just sent a proof of what it will look like and it is pretty cool.
Well, tweet it or post it here.
i don’t think i can post it bc it’s just in an email to me. i will see if i can figure out how to tweet it.
We got wrapped pucks as favors with writing on them at the wedding last fall. He had his hockey coach, who had become a reverend able to marry people in his spare time, do the service. He was the kiddo who has played hockey his whole life and interned with the NY Rangers and set up their youth program. I think they had a giant puck for the groom’s cake too.
we have no need of a grooms cake with the 4-5 tier cake with 3 different flavors and a cookie table, but we were thinking of a flyers themed cake, if we were going to do one.
I’m just happy you aren’t doing cupcakes!
Not what I was expecting.
I wouldn’t rick roll you. My daughter has her Spanish exam today.
i think cupcakes are a great idea, no cutting required! i am still amazed at the idea of multiple flavors in one cake. that was not available back in our wedding era, or if it was, we did not know about it. They decided on the choc mousse layer, a bavarian cream with fruit layer, and a tiramisu layer. With the choc mousse being the biggest layer or two. This place makes the best cake we have ever tasted anywhere. And it was cheaper than the other place they looked and tasted.
No, not Rockrolling, but I was expecting something that rocks, like my Fastway oldie.
And here i thought the ‘ellifIknow” was how the GrOPe establishment was going to justify their votes every day.....
Then again, Obama’s democratic press corpse is determined to link any and all peaceniks and flower children with Hillary’s “love everybody” campaign. Kind of a hippiegraft to her neck in case she falls again I suppose.
Election day down here in GA.
* a/k/a RINOphant rhymes with sycophant, most of whom the former are.
And unlike these all-too-real political creatures, at least the mythical Hippogriff is not a hypocrite by nature
You do know that the intersection of “songs I like” and “songs you like” is very small.
like, maybe there’s one? ; )
music is not my raison d’etre, generally. i really really really like silence best of all. there are times i will play my ipod in the car, i like the drive time DJ in the AM, bc they are funny and interesting and makes the commute pass quickly. But in the house, i do not turn the TV on to have background noise, i do not turn music on.
I think some of the more poppy 80s music. And some alt/grunge.
but not hairbands....
His voice is annoying. He should stick to instrumentals because he’s a decent guitarist.
I’m not much of an audiophile, but like art I know what I DON’T like monotonous & insipid.
(When I clicked on the link to Soother’s oldie, the similar title raised the hackles ;)
Incorrect! I have always wanted a pool table - I had no interest in formal areas in our home and wanted to put a pool table in the dining room but there just wasn’t room...I’m still sad about it
Those all sound wonderful!
