California Cops Kill Man Claiming Self-Defense; Citizen Video Indicates Otherwise
Photography is Not a Crime ^ | May 20th, 2014 | Carlos Miller

Posted on 05/21/2014 7:47:22 AM PDT by eccentric

Salinas police killed a man earlier today, claiming to the local media that they were in fear for their lives after he had waved a pair of garden shearers in their direction, indicating he was going to shred them to pieces.

But then a witness posted a video online, contradicting those claims, showing the man trying to walk away from the cops as they move in on him barking orders with their guns drawn.

Read the statement below and view the video above and tell me what you think.

According to the Californian:

Attempts at hailing the man in English and Spanish were unsuccessful, Maiorana said. Officers then unsuccessfully deployed a Taser as the man began waving the gardening shears in the air, he said.

“This individual pulled the gardening shears and actually attempted to attack the officers with the gardening shears,” Maiorana said. “In response, the officers, fearing for their personal safety, shot this individual, and this individual is now deceased.”

Both officers involved fired and will be placed on paid administrative leave, per policy, Maiorana said. He wouldn’t identify the officers except to say both are veterans of the force with “many, many years” under their belts.

Investigators are currently poring over video evidence and witness statements, Maiorana said. The video evidence will most likely not be publicized, he added.

According to KION:

Officers told Central Coast News they told the man to drop the shears in both English and Spanish, and that he refused to comply and began waving them around. They say officers attempted to use a stun gun but it was not effective.

Officers claim the man lunged at them with the sheers and they fired their guns, fatally wounding him.

According to Fox 35:

The Salinas Police Department is dealing with another officer involved fatal shooting. This time, the shooting involved two officers who shot and killed a man who reportedly lunged at them with gardening shears.

And the Monterey Herald News:

Police said a resident told them a man carrying a pair of “scissors” appeared to be trying to break into her house and was attacking her dog. Police found the man carrying hedge clippers and acting erratically. Officers said the man came at them and, fearing for their safety and the safety of others, they shot him.

This is the second questionable shooting by Salinas police in just over a week.

Um, we’re in the internet age, the video is already out there and can never be put back in the bottle.

The guy may have been a threat. Sure seems like there are better ways then deadly force.

From the video the guy was ignoring orders and was moving away from the cops. The one cop moves in closer, the man turns, and they shoot.

Looks like a homeless drunk wetback bumm. They stink and
it rubs off on things. The fuzz would much rather shoot
the guy than wrestle him to the ground to cuff him and have
to wear and smell the homeless drunk funk the rest of the day.
Death before deodorant. Now if the drunk homeless wetback
looking dude would have been a clean pretty smelling fella
he would have most likely just got his ass beat.
Moral of this story, always bathe and smell good. In today’s
era of the jackboot thug your life may depend on it.

Nope, it’s not news. You see, us Kalifornicators are just so used to corruption and out of control police that we try to prevent any mention of such things outside state lines...

It’s not like there aren’t any cops killing citizens in other states under dubious circumstances and the LSM is breathlessly reporting on it, is it?

We rather enjoy our corruption and we try not to let on to outsiders that we’re not only corrupt, we’re masochists and enjoy it.

So no, it’s not “news”. It’s not like there isn’t any corruption going on in the rest of the country, right?

It’s reserved solely for Kalifornia, so keep your hands off of OUR corruption and go make your own!

What feels even better than killing one person and getting away with it? Killing a couple of people.

The driver of the white truck is pretty lucky he wasn’t shot as well. The cop probably felt threatened by him too.

Based on that video it does appear that the suspect turns and confronts the officers before being shot... anything beyond that can’t be concluded, very poor video, far away and poor angle.

Only thing that can be seen is the suspect did indeed turn around and move closer to the officer... whether he was waving sheers or not can’t tell.

There is something wrong with a system that trains cops to both forthrightly insert themselves into dodgy situations, and also shoot if they fear for their personal safety. It’s a recipe for murder. “I got into his face, and then I subsequently feared for my personal safety, therefore, I shot and killed him.” “Good shoot.” Meanwhile, the standard for the peasants is they have to all but prove six ways from Sunday that they were in imminent fear of death, couldn’t escape, and had no other options. I wish we didn’t have a caste system and that the same standard applied to cops that applies to us peasants.

Two cops could’ve taken this guy down in a brief scuffle, but they might’ve gotten their uniforms dirty. Aren’t cops taught hand-to-hand combat? That definitely should’ve been the course of action here.

We don't need police at all then. If we're just going to shoot to kill people who pose a threat, any moron with a gun can do that, and they'd probably do it for free. If you really want a dude in uniform, we could just arm mall cops and be done with it at minimum wage.

Police are supposed to have the training and mindset to deal with situations with some degree of skill and discretion, and that's why they get the salaries, bennies and protection that we don't give to, say, mall cops or the average guy on the street.

I'm sure there are plenty of good cops, and I'm sure it's not an easy job, but I find it unreasonable that two trained police offers could find no other way to deal with a lone guy with a set of hedge clippers whom they had isolated from the public, than to shoot him dead in the street.

So deadly force is the only option? The guy was not threatening anyone until the cop put himself within danger. Even then its not clear from the video the guy was actually threatening the cop.

Do we really want to live in a society where we are a hair trigger away from being put down by cops?

A friend of mine was a cop for many years. He never fired his weapon at a civilian. He was very proud of his ability to de-escalate a situation and get the suspect in cuffs without using his weapon. He was a good cop. He now resides in cop heaven.

About 15 years ago I worked with a guy who used to be a Tampa cop. He was proud of the fact he had shot and killed 3 people. He would tell you all about the shootings. How they failed to follow orders and he put a .45 acp into their chest and they dropped.

Apparently 3 shootings was the limit for Tampa PD and they forced him out. But he’s a murderer running around living his life with zero legal concerns from the shootings.
