The Seinfeld finale was exquisite.

They wound down the show backward to the first episode.

It was basically a comic take on Finnegan's Wake.

Shear genius.

My two suggestions would be:

The Prisoner (that was just mean. If it weren’t the 60s, McGoohan would have hanged.)

The Fugitive (as if Gerard would give Kimball 24 hours to find the one-armed man).

Mary Tyler Moore. They’re all fired. Now what?

And #1

Gilligan’s Island (not counting the later movies). That’s it? They’re stuck?!

The "How I Met Your Mother" finale was OK, but I guessed what it was going to be from the first season.

Barney gets a sex change, marries Ted and then it turns out their children are the product of some creepy cloning technology.

Kind of disturbing, but it makes sense based on the characters.

The WatchMojo.com team are obviously a bunch of youngsters. In these lists, they rarely show anything before 1990.

The only ones I saw were Seinfeld and St. Elsewhere (I liked Quantum Leap but never saw the end). Seinfeld’s ending was a disappointment and the end of St. Elsewhere was weird. I still remember it after all these years without having to watch the clip, so that must say something.

Never watched one episode of any of them. I wasn’t in to network programming back then, and I don’t do situation comedies either.

I love the endings for Lost and Sopranos, it’s good to not have everything tied in a bow and handed to you, do a little thinking, figure stuff out. BSG was odd, but so was the show.

The best ever was the Newhart one where he woke up in bed in his previous series as if it was all a bad dream.

Of course before 1990 you didn’t have much in the way of serialized TV, it was episodic. And the end of an episodic show is different, there’s no hanging plot threads to tie down, those are pretty much just taking a bow, usually to a greatly reduced audience.

I’ve come to accept the Sopranos ending. St. Elsewhere was a great show and the finale was a total betrayal of the viewers.

Funny you mention The Prisoner. As a matter of fact Patrick McGoohan had angry fans storm his house after it was over. I’ve watched it a dozen times and still can’t figure out what the heck happened. I didn’t even notice any kind of symbolism they were trying to sneak in. I wonder if they’ll ever reboot it...

This might get me flamed but I thought the Battlestar Galactica reboot was awesome, even the ending.

I confess, I am a huge fan of “Mad Men” but I am dreading thinking about how they are going to end it. I hope it won’t be ambiguous like the Sopranos.

At least they had a finale. I still fume about no real ending for shows like Deadwood and Jericho.

I wonder if they’ll ever reboot it...

There was an A&E redo a few years ago with Jim Caviezel. I would not watch it, but they gave it the Matrix treatment.

I am afraid that this is one show that cannot be redone. It is a product of another time. Think how pathetically easy it would be to control the place. Rover the weather balloon? We have drones. manually moved cameras in statues? Hi-res satellite video in real time. That giant filing computer in the beginning would be replaced by a single server and a SAN.

AMC did a “re imagination” of The Prisoner a few years ago, and it has a nice neat explanation. It also sucks, and the explanation is insultingly stupid.

In the short term fans of The Prisoner hated the ending, but eventually most loved it, and it achieved exactly what McGoohan wanted. People had to think. He said later that he loved the effect it had, throughout the rest of his life people would approach him with their explanation. He said he always told them they were right, because the important part was they thought about it and came up with an answer, and whether or not it was the same answer he had when he wrote it didn’t matter.

Or you can pick up the McGoohan authorized graphic novel, which provides an OK explanation. They consulted with him, told him what they thought, he said they were right.
