Full headline: Does this skull belong to a soldier of the Battle of Hastings? 1,000-year-old remains found near famous battlefield reveal man was hacked six times in the head from behind
Remains were found Lewes, East Sussex - around 20 miles from the famous battlefield - on the site of a medieval hospital
They belong to a 45-year-old-man who took six sword blows to the top of his head before dying
Scientists used radio carbon dating to conclude that the man was probably involved in fighting at the time of the Norman invasion
They think he was likely British because of the way he was buried
No bones have previously been recovered of anyone who fought and died in the battle of 1066 and experts are excited by the discovery
The skull forms part of a skeleton that was first dug up in 1994 during excavations in Lewes, East Sussex - around 20 miles from the famous battlefield.
Bones were originally sent to experts at the University of York as part of preparations to celebrate the 750th anniversary of the Battle of Lewes.

Hastings was a tough day for this Brit.
That is an official 'bad hair' day. Ouch.
but they still haven’t found the bullet that killed Vince Foster......
How much different this battle would have been if there were formations of gays and women...
Gives a new meaning to blow me.
If it had a arrow through the eye — it could have been Harold.
“six blows to the top of the head”
He was pretty well smitten. Smited? Smote?
(”Stay down Henry, you stubborn git!”)
6 whacks w a sword?!?!
If not for the evidence of the damage to the skull I would have suggested wimpy swordsman...but...DAMN!
Mama. I think my head hurts!
“Ay’m not dead yet!”
“Merely a flesh wound...”
“Its only a flesh wound.”
HA! Only four seconds separate geniuses...
The Wars of the Roses were just as nasty.
The guy was faking it.
Must have been a government worker who committed suicide.
Workplace violence was cutting edge, even back then.
Fetchez la vache!
Thar wuz Mooselims at Hastings?
Finding that bullet might take til 2993...
Nope, just my Ancestors.
Well, the ones that survived to fight another day.
Workplace violence was prevalent that day. Uff Dah!
Id be more than willing to Join The New Crusade ..if that becomes necessary!!
How far is this from King Harald’s battle with Harald Hardrada at Stamford Bridge?
I wonder if he was wearing a hardened leather helm?
I’ve got the 1966 National Geographic issue about Hastings, the one with the Bayeaux Tapestry in it.
Hurrah Harold Godwinson—— a real leader! Not like our current rodents.
Or Moe Green.
Battlefield at Hastings (or more accurately, near Hastings) from the north as it appears today.
Behind the abbey ruins, the battlefield.
Harold's body was later moved to Waltham Abbey in Essex.

To any freepers have any British ancestry whatsoever: you’re probably looking at the skull of a direct ancestor. And the only reason I say “probably” is we don’t know if the dead gentleman had kids. If he had a few kids, it goes up to a sure thing.
So sue someone for dishonoring the bones of your ancestor!
We know the skull is British because of the bad teeth.
The Politicians will be Politicians voters have incrementally allowed the heat to be slowly turned up under the water that they, the voter-frogs have been floating in. On the brief History of Taxation Transition, for example:
1.) NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION![Read: we will not pay for any Government that denies us our say in how we are governed.]
2.) NO PROGRESS WITHOUT TAXATION! [Read: Progress is good, and so are taxes.]
3.) WE ARE TAXED ENOUGH ALREADY! [Read: For the sake of our grandchildrens future descendants, abolish NOW all of the Federal Welfare Entitlement State!]
The frogs who are not Taxed Enough Already, such as Boehner, Cantor, McCarthy, Ryan, Issa, Mike Rogers, Peter King Of NY, McConnell, Cornyn, McCain, Ayotte, Alexander and Collins have chosen to stay in the pot of their own making, and thus are of NO value to those of us that KNOW that we are Taxed Enough Already.
It is from the latter group, the so-called TEA Party that leaders will come to employ the Constitutional Checks and Balances that Boehner and the rest of the NOT taxed Enough Already, Doormat to Democrat Republicans have steadfastly refused to use.
Without EFFECTIVE Leaders to apply the Constitutional Checks and Balances, those who are Taxed Enough Already will be finally told the following typical Third World Dictate:
4.) THERE WILL BE NO MORE PROGRESS OR REPRESENTATION, - - - ONLY TAXATION, - - - SWEET, INFINITE, TAXATION!
IIRC the English army had to hump it around 220 miles from Stamford Bridge to Hastings. I believe——guess-——that the bridge was the site of an old Roman structure.
I have long wondered what the heck happened to all the leftover Norse ships that they could not man any more. Have never seen anyone address that.
Kind of weird that Harald and Harold were both slain by archers.
Wow, I had no idea Chelsea FC's stadium was so old.
Even Lizzie Borden gave 40 whacks!
The Saxons had long handled Axes, the Normans swords. The Normans were mounted the Saxons afoot. The wounds imply he was a Saxon Brit—Not a Norman. These wounds were inflicted when he may have been wearing a helmet too! My ancestor was a Norman knight who fought at Hastings. 45 years old implys he was a noble—peassants didn’t live that long and stay in shape for battle.
He better get that thing looked at.
That guy had one bad splitting headache.
Accounts have him surviving a battle near Lucerne lost against the Catholics (he was a military Chaplain) to be found wounded. They demanded he recant, and when he would not....they murdered him.
I recall seeing a documentary about the discovery of a bunch of HEADLESS skeletons they found near the coast in south west England. The skulls were nearby in a pit....so evidently all these men were all executed by beheading—around AD 1000. The scientists were able to discern the sword or axe wounds were from strokes from the FRONT, not the back, so these guys saw themselves get beheaded...perhaps by choice, upright and kneeling.
Mineral tests of the bones proved they were Scandinavian....and accounts of skirmishes with Vikings are common in this part of England. 100 skeletons were found....and Viking ships typically held 50....so this was 2 ships of Viking raiders, caught, and dispatched immediately...probably for piracy (and just viking...).
A couple of skulls were missing, from which the historians assumed were probably put on pikes near the pit where the bodies were buried (on top of a hill), as a gruesome warning to others.....
I clicked on this partly to see if archaeologists thought he was British because... of tea-stained teeth.
1066 was a pretty rough year for many of the English, probably none more so than this man.
* “I am soooo OVER wearing Michelle’s Mom Jeans!”
* “Holder let me borrow his Contempt of Congress dude suit.”
* “Do you think it makes me look fat?”
* “Reggie Love asked me to wear this later tonight.”
* “The colors? Well, I am half Black.”
“who took six sword blows to the top of his head before dying”
It it was a suspicious death of someone involved in a democrat political scandal the coroner would rule it a suicide.
