The Best Ice Creams Money Can Buy
Yahoo ^ | May 23, 2014 | Consumer Reports

Plain as it is, vanilla is the nation’s favorite ice-cream flavor. Our expert tasters tried 19 (including gelatos), separating the yum from the ho-hum. For ice-cream lovers who venture beyond vanilla, we also recommend a dozen in three other flavors: salted caramel, mint chip, and fudge brownie.

Taste. Among vanillas, Ben & Jerry’s and Häagen-Dazs are the clear winners: dense and creamy, with intense dairy flavor and complex, high-quality vanilla flavor. A runner-up, Talenti, is quite sweet and a bit icy, with a fruity-floral vanilla flavor typical of Tahitian vanilla.

As you go down the Ratings, the ice creams tend to be a bit more gummy or have vanilla flavor that’s generic or less pronounced.

Ah, Blue Belle, for the little cremery om Bremham, Texs. My absolute favorite is their butter pecan. I have been to their creamery in Brenham.

Another vote for Blue Bell Homestyle Vanilla. There is really no comparison. For those of you who are doubtful, go get a gallon and eat some with no toppings or adornment. It is amazing. A rich, creamy, eggy, vanilla explosion in every bite.

we owned a mom and pop grocery in Logan WV. I would stock shelves or help my dad deliver groceries in the summer and could talk whatever I wanted from the store.

Häagen-Dazs Carmel Cone is awesome. Vanilla ice cream with carmel swirls and little bits of chocolate.

Off to the kitchen I go!

Right, less fat. Apparently the regulation in Italy is that gelato must contain at least 3.5% milk fat versus 10% to be called ice cream here in America. And more dense with less air. Which brings up a point about Ben & Jerry’s. They may be flaming leftists but their ice cream has noticeably less air whipped into it than most brands. Generally speaking it is a superior product.

If there’s a Häagen-Dazs shop at the mall or freestanding they usually have peppermint but what a pain.

In the Summer of 1969 I ran the milkshake machine at a huge Summer retreat. At the beginning of the Summer the Sealtest guy came by and showed me how to operate the machine, to disassemble it for cleaning etc.

He told me he could make the best milkshake I ever tasted but that it was illegal to sell it in North Carolina. He then took a half gallon of ice milk mix and poured it into the machine.

After it was ready, he made a milk shake for me and sure enough, it was the best one I had ever tasted. I asked him why it was illegal to sell it and he said it was so rich that it made people sick. sure enough, maybe 15 minutes later I began to feel a bit nauseous. I never did get so bad that I threw up buy I understood what he was saying.

Graeter’s in southwest Ohio (Cincinnati area) is some of the best ice cream I've tasted anywhere. I've lived in the inter-mountain west, west coast, northeast and midwest spread out over 40 plus years. Graeter’s ice cream is the best.

I think Kroger’s Private Selection is better than Hagen Daz. I get it at Ralph’s.

I’ve been buying their strawberry and their Crushed Vanilla Bean.

It was probably around 1969 as I worked at a snack and icr cream parlor, a huge one, that Summer. I am sure the manager told me butter pecan was the most popular but I think I also read it somewhere too.

I just looked it up and the site I used said vanilla number one, chocolate number two and butter pecan third. At least it is still up there with the top ones.
