Couple accuses mail carrier of fatally injuring their dog with a rock

FORT WORTH — Police and U.S. Postal Service officials are investigating a complaint by a Meadowbrook area couple that a mail carrier fatally injured their Yorkshire terrier by hitting him with a rock.

The 5-year-old dog named Maxwell wandered across the street from his owners’ residence in the 3600 block of Hazeline Road about 11 a.m. Saturday, Maxwell’s owner, Lawrence Brown, said Monday.

Brown, 46, said he was in the garage and didn’t realize Maxwell was across the street when he heard a dog yelping in pain.

As he walked toward the street, Brown saw the mail carrier and asked, “What did you do to that dog?”

“He said, ‘I got me one,’ ” Brown said.

That’s when Brown realized that the injured dog was Maxwell.

“I asked him why he hit my wife’s dog with a rock, and he said, ‘I did what I had to do,’ ” Brown said.

A veterinarian at an emergency clinic told the Browns that Maxwell had a shattered skull and severe spinal cord injury and couldn’t be saved, so the dog was euthanized, Lawrence Brown said.

A Fort Worth police officer “responded to an animal cruelty report call” about 2:15 p.m. Saturday from the Browns’ address, said officer Daniel Segura, a police spokesman. “The victim told officers that the possible suspect was the mail carrier,” Segura said.

Police have talked to a U.S. Postal Service letter carrier’s supervisor, Segura said.

Police are not releasing the letter carrier’s name, and no arrest has been made, Segura said.

The postal service is investigating the Browns’ complaint, said Arlene Sanchez, a Postal Service spokeswoman for the Dallas-Fort Worth area.

“The postal service takes the issue of dog bite prevention very seriously,” Sanchez said by email. “We are saddened at the loss of the customer’s pet.

Did the guy fail his cop exam and become a mail carrier instead?

A grown man afraid of a Yorkie, an animal bred to kill rats is not going to be able to do much damage to a full sized human being. If it were my dog this postal worker would be on the wrong end of “I got me one” one night. Anyone that would do that to an animal, well let’s just he would be doing more for the earth as fertilizer.

Yep, it’s only a matter of time before the “thrill” of attacking a 10 pound dog gives way to the thrill of attacking bigger animals or children or the elderly.....

I thought the US Postal Service had ammunition!!!!!!

Can’t they shoot dogs the way cops do?!?

Hey...gubmint employees...better be careful. People aren’t going to put up with your sh*t much longer.

(we have ammo, too.)

There are still plenty of old abandoned mines, like the one I lost all my guns and ammo in, throughout the California and Nevada deserts. Sometimes terrible accidents happen.

A month ago a meter reader in Los Angeles did the same thing to a home owners Yorkie..asked to enter the property, the homeowner said yes but one minute while I put in my dogs..as soon as she turned around he was already on her property, the yorkies went up to him like dogs do, and he took a baton and hit one of them named Bean Bean and killed him..when the homeowner asked him why he did it he said “Ive been bitten twice today so its not my problem” the dog died on the way to the hospital..if either of these people had done the same thing to my dog that person would get a bullet to the head

I wonder.

For some time now, people have pointed out that meter readers, mailmen, etc, manage to do their jobs around dogs without shooting them. I wonder if this is an indication that they also are receiving New Training and this will become more widespread.

Hopefully this is Another isolated incident (tm).

NO ONE, goes into my yard unless I take them back. I don’t have a little dog, nothing wrong with them, I have a 140+ pound Mastador and nobody gets to him. I started locking up tight years ago when any jack who wanted up the pole thought they could access my property without permission and leave the gate open for my prior dogs to get out. And quite simply, anyone hurts my dog is the same as hurting my family, my response will be swift and extremely painful, none of this calling the police crap. Not by me anyway.

It’s called precedent.

When people discover that others consistenly get away with something, they tend to try it themselves.

[did meter readers get tons of ammo like the PO did?]

The postal worker was out of line injuring the dog. On his defence, though, and not knowing the character of the dog, I will say that generally the Yorkie owners I've seen (note: generally, so if you're a Yorkie owner who doesn't fit this profile, I do not mean you) do NOT control their dogs. They go around barking and howling and snapping and chasing which would not be tolerated in bigger dogs.

I don't know in this case so have no opinion on this particular case.

!!!

We have to *make* them come read our meter in person rather than guesstimate it.

Even though the Dobes are inside the house, the meter is right beside the front window.

The glass must not look sturdy enough.
