I wonder how many people will actually understand your reference to the “dogwood” tree...

I have read countless pit bull attack stories where the owner says that their dogs “got out.” I’ve watched videos of pits hunting the streets in packs because they “got out.” Pits get out of animal enclosures, muzzles (video of that - dog just wiped the muzzle off its face), leashes, THROUGH locked screen doors etc. When they want to go hunting or have someone specific to attack they can ALWAYS get out. So, perhaps this lady carries a knife because the pits have “gotten out” before and she wisely understood just what it would take to stop a pit attack. I’ve read of people hitting pits with tire irons, baseball bats etc. so the owner really didn’t stand a chance of stopping the attack and there are many bloody stories of pits transferring their attack to owners or others who try to intercede. Your dogs are safer if they are kept inside where they can’t get hit by cars or people defending themselves.

It seems most people who go out to walk there dogs don't think to take along their fillet knife with them.

I think it is more a matter of preference. While I am a firm believer in Gibb's Rule Number 9, a filleting knife seems a bit flimsy for self-defense.

I prefer something more along the lines of a double-edged 4-inch to 6-inch model for ease of use and comfortable carry.

Fast draw, lots of leverage in use, and relatively quiet in action. Easily carried on a belt and protected from dust and moisture by even a light windbreaker when worn properly.

I never read these pit bull stories but finally one comes along with the kind of headline I couldn’t resist.

Here’s a lady who could make a fine living as a highly paid dog walker-slash-bodyguard for sure...

They would if the area has had mountain lion sightings, as has Apple Valley, CA. She’d be a fool NOT to carry a knife or gun when walking her dogs.

I would hate to go against a mountain lion with a knife, although it has been done before (successfully even).

I remember a few years back a logger on Vancouver Island walking down a logging road was jumped by a cougar and he was able to turn on it and kill it with his pocket knife. Wow!

I would even hate to go against a couple of pitbulls with a knife.

Like Rumsfeld said, "You go to war with what you've got," but the more substantial the better.

I always carry a knife especially when I'm going where I can't carry a gun, and if I go where I can carry neither, I feel downright naked.

Some women are carrying knives 24/7.

Hey, a knife is a whole lot better than getting your fingernails all torn up and skin and hair in your teeth.

I encourage them wholeheartedly when nothing better is available.

Maybe this woman used to work in one of those Japanese steak houses where they really know how to use knives. She obviously got a helluva job done! Probably helps to know where the critical veins are. I’d hit fat or flesh only.
