Five people safely evacuated a motorboat after colliding with a whale off the coast of Pescadero Saturday afternoon, according to the San Mateo County Sheriffs Office.
At about 2:40 p.m., sheriffs deputies received a report that a boat had collided with a whale about five to ten miles from shore, San Mateo County Sheriffs Office spokeswoman Rebecca Rosenblatt said.
Rosenblatt said the occupants of the boat reported seeing the whale and feeling their boat collide with it. The boats engine was disabled during the collision and strong waves started pushing the vessel closer to the rocky coast. Once near the shore, all five boaters were able to disembark the vessel and get to dry land near Pebble Beach, Rosenblatt said.
The San Mateo County Sheriffs Office assisted in getting a salvage company to the boat, which had been pushed up close to the rocks in the protectedmarine sanctuary, Rosenblatt said.
Deputies and the salvage team are working to ensure the ecosystem is protected from possible gas or oil spillage during the salvage operation.
Both the whale and the boaters appear to be uninjured, Rosenblatt said.

This is a case of shoot, shovel, and shut up.
These boaters are in for one hell of a federal criminal case for disturbing the whale. Now if they were installing a windmill...
Shouldn't they drag the whale up on the beach so they can check it and make sure it wasn't injured in the collision?
We will know that the boaters are democrats if they aren't nailed for this:
"Level A Harassment means any act of pursuit, torment, or annoyance which has the potential to injure a marine mammal or marine mammal stock in the wild. "
Sounds like they had a whale of a time!
Confusing.
They disembark onto Pebble Beach, in South Monterey County and San Mateo dispatches a salvage ship (tow truck)?????
from like 90+ miles away???
There are several services available in the are from less than 7 nautical miles away....

Gimme a break! It’s a small boat and a huge ocean. What damage could a couple of gallons of gas or a bit of oil possibly do? ...CA has well known oil seepage from the ocean floor just offshore and it’s happened for decades, with no damaging effects.
I believe all the guns were lost. Tragic.
Now that’s one head on collision I think I would want to avoid. I’m sure the boaters will be charged with reckless sailing because the whale had the right of way.
That’s what I was thinking, the distance is great, how did they get to Pebble Beach?
Back Stroke?
I’ve sailed from 1/2 Moon Bay to Monterey and vice versa.
Beautiful way to spend the day. Shoulders take a beatin but, awesome.
Just not understanding why they would co-ordinate from 1/2 Moon Bay Harbor.
I only sail in the Bay. There was a whale spotted in the Bay this week. Not by me though.
Of course not by you, that’d be wrong and being wrong is for homos....
And liberals.
;-)
Pescadero is like Disney World for whales.
Where’s Cap’t. Ahab when you need him?
A local business owner in our city was actually killed when their small boat collided with a whale in Morrow Bay.
A couple of years ago a guy whose boat was docked in our marina took his 40 ft sport fisher right outside the mouth of the harbor. A whale took the whole bottom out of the boat. He and his dog were saved by a nearby guy diving for some kind of pots he had put out.
Stuff happens.
