Grads Get 10 Priceless Pointers From Navy SEAL to ‘Change the World.’

At their commencement University of Texas students were treated to a speaker who knows a thing or two about fighting through adversity: a U.S. Navy SEAL.

Admiral William McRaven, a UT grad who served with SEAL Team 3, delivered a powerful speech last weekend, laying out 10 life lessons for grads if they want “to change the world.”

Of course, SEALs are an elite group built on tradition and some terms — “sugar cookies” and “circuses,” for instance — that don’t mean what the rest of us immediately assume.

To really absorb McRaven’s advice, you probably need to watch the whole speech.

McRaven in his own words:

“If you want to change the world…”

1. “…start off by making your bed.”

“The wisdom of this simple act has been proven to me many times over,” McRaven said. “If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day. It will give you a small sense of pride, and it will encourage you to do another task, and another, and another, and by the end of the day that one task completed will have turned into many tasks completed.”

Read this earlier today. Powerful, powerful and very wise words. Would that I heard them and learned them at a much younger age.

1. “…start off by making your bed.”

It may sound silly but he's right. Many years ago when I went through some serious depression I made up my mind to start with that. It worked just like he says. Start the day with one good step and keep building on it and before you know it you are filling your days with positive actions.

1. “…start off by making your bed.”

Love that one...but an alternative might be to not ever go to bed with a dirty sink. Nothing like coming into the kitchen with a clean sink.

Finishing the day right is a very good step too but if you start right where you wake up and keep going the rest falls into place. After a while the chores aren't chores anymore but they are a good framework for filling a day with supplemental productiveness.

Or as a co-worker put it to me once, clean the barn first and then go for a ride.

Charismatic guy, I respect his SEAL service. And nice speech.

Uh…this guy heads up JSOC, which is basically a military within the US military and he takes his orders directly from *Barak Obama*:

Let that sink in, people.

This is the guy who goes out and kills whoever Obama tell him to.

You know what? Who your boss is MATTERS.

At his level the actor has to be a very political actor, and under this particular REGIME that is a very bad thing.

I’d say maybe HALF of the people he has killed have actually been real enemies of the USA —maybe less.

If you trust this guy you should realize you have to trust his BOSS.

I sure as heck DO NOT.

Speech of the year! No question about it!

I like Admiral McRaven for the next President of the United States of America!

This had been forwarded to my family a few days ago by an Uncle who is retired from Dow Jones. The WSJ printed the excerpt of the speech a few days back, IIRC. My Uncle, a Texas native, had mentioned that McRaven had given a similarly good speech at a ceremony at the Nimitz Museum.

Whoa -- not so fast, Kemosabe! Admiral McRaven looks good and makes great speeches, but he is the glory seeking blabber mouth who was dressed down by special operations legend LtGen James Vaught, USA(Ret.) two years ago at a symposium attended by senior special operations officers. Said General Vaught to the admiral's face:

“Since the time when your wonderful team went and drug bin Laden out and got rid of him, and more recently when you went down and rescued the group in Somalia, or wherever the hell they were, they’ve been splashing all of this all over the media. I flat don’t understand that.

"Now back when my special operators extracted Saddam [Hussein] from the hole, we didn’t say one damn word about it. We turned him over to the local commander and told him to claim that his forces drug him out of the hole, and he did so. And we just faded away and kept our mouth shut.

"Now I’m going to tell you, one of these days, if you keep publishing how you do this, the other guy’s going to be there ready for you, and you’re going to fly in and he’s going to shoot down every damn helicopter and kill every one of your SEALs. Now, watch it happen. Mark my words. Get the hell out of the media!”

There is much wisdom in General Vaught's words.

I agree —there is also Extortion 17, and LOTS of other spooky, inexplicable stuff that went down under the command of this admittedly charismatic man.

We are finding out more and more that the US political rot is not only the dems —it is a LOT of Republicans, a whole lot, and I refuse to believe that is is not also in the US military and also, most sadly, also in SOCOM.

I…I’m sad to say it, but the fish rots from the head down, and I’m trying to get ahead of the curve and keep nasty surprises to a minimum.

LOTS of SEALs have been needlessly dying.

Great speeches simply don’t do it for me anymore...
