A 25-year-old woman was stoned to death by her family outside one of Pakistan's top courts on Tuesday in a so-called "honor" killing for marrying the man she loved, police said.
Her father, two brothers and former fiance were among the attackers, he said. Iqbal suffered severe head injuries and was pronounced dead in hospital, police said.
All the suspects except her father escaped. He admitted killing his daughter, Cheema said, and explained it was a matter of honor. Many Pakistani families think a woman marrying her own choice of man brings dishonor on the family.
Iqbal had been engaged to her cousin but married another man, Cheema said. Her family registered a kidnapping case against him but Iqbal had come to court to argue that she had married of her own free will, he said.
Around 1,000 Pakistani women are killed every year by their families in honor killings, according to Pakistani rights group the Aurat Foundation.
The true figure is probably many times higher since the Aurat Foundation only compiles figures from newspaper reports. The government does not compile national statistics.
But in honor killings, most of the time the women's killers are her family, said Wasim Wagha of the Aurat Foundation. The law allows them to nominate someone to do the murder, then forgive him.
"This is a huge flaw in the law," he said. "We are really struggling on this issue."

Wait till Nanzi Pelosi hears about this.
Islam will slam you
Yes, and the solution to restore honor is to stone your daughter to death.
I can't tell if this is an individual moron or whole religion of morons. The acceptance of killing by Muslims suggests the later.
Paki version of Sharia. Lovely folks.
There will be Tweets about this, that’s for sure.
And to a lot of American Liberals, this is no different than a Christian saying homosexuality is a sin, or a Christian baker refusing to bake a cake for a gay wedding.
Sending tweets is pretty courageous.
And the world sees once again what humankind will become if the father of lies is given more power amongst us. But of course the scam is so well installed that they will not even see what is plainly displayed before them. The demonic angels of Tolerance and Political correctness have the fog turned up, bigtime.
its a lot easier and safer than doing anything meaningful.
Won’t hold my breath waiting for the premiere of the
Lifetime movie about this.
I worked with a politically (liberal) active gay guy. He was going to some pro-muslim protest and I told him, “The Muslims are just using you. In reality they would kill you if they could because you’re gay.” He thought about it for a long time, then said I was probably right.
typical moozlums. Isn’t it a wonderful, peaceful culture? I suspect the murdered young woman is “at peace” now. Note to self: Cancel the planned walking tour of pakistan.
Yea, I was being sarcastic. If she was really going to do something, she would send out a selfie with a sign about saving girls.
In this case it is like in the deep south when slavery was legal. A slave escaped her master who was about to sell her to join the plantation of her choice. I don’t think that happened that often though.
Without first cousin marriages and the resulting “mentally-disabled” offspring, how can the family immigrate to the US and live off of SSI? She destroyed their dream.
Animals. Heathen animals. Cowards, and animals.
Excuse me, but first-cousin marriages are for the most part perfectly genetically safe and in fact were HONORABLE and ACCEPTABLE in Western culture up until recently, historically speaking. READ JANE AUSTEN. The ridiculous and stupid paranoia around first-cousin marriages, which has WRONGLY made them shameful and embarrassing, mortifies MANY Americans today who are afraid to admit that their grandparents, or great grandparents, were cousins who married -- said marriage being in fact perfectly honorable and right.
HG Wells married his first cousin. Werner von Braun married his first cousin. Albert Einstein married his second cousin. Edgar Allen Poe married his first cousin. Queen Victoria married her cousin. MANY historical figures married cousins, including first cousins, and in fact, birth defects from first-cousin marriages are not remotely as common as popular myth has it. I know this for certain because I lived among folks who have been marrying first cousins for four generations, and most of their kids are just fine.
It is disgusting that the idea of first-cousin marriages, a perfectly good thing, has been distorted and twisted and perverted by today's culture. INCEST is between siblings or between parent and child. There are ZERO biblical warnings against first-cousin marriages.
We give this country $1.2 billion in foreign aid every year. How many vets would that pay to treat?
My comment was meant to edge into dark humor, and perhaps your response was meant in the same vein. Hopefully you did not read mine as a actually explaining the woman’s murder. I got a smile from your lines, “...not remotely as common as popular myth has it”, and “most of their kids are fine.”
Obviously not all first cousin marriages result in genetic defects, and many fine folks have indulged historically, and still do. You point would be better made by citing brilliant offspring of f.c.m., rather than famous marry-ers from times before modern genetics were understood. But I was not drawing on popular myths, or wonderful literature, but direct observation. In my own limited acquaintance with Pakistani families, there were a multiplicity of mentally-retarded children, all from first cousin marriages. It’s not that first cousin marriage equates with nuclear family incest, but that inbreeding increases the chance of genetic problems. “Most of the kids” might be fine. It’s a serious and self-indulgent gamble.
Nonetheless, you are right it is risky. The only think I really object to is the common idea that is so horribly improper, because it isn't and never has been. But as you say, it is "a serious and self-indulgent gamble" at least within families greedy to keep all property within blood inheritors.
Hybrid vigor is real! Probably the best reason not to marry a cousin!
