Abolish the Week! It’s unnatural. It’s unnecessary. Why the seven-day week has got to go.
Slate ^ | May 27, 2014 | Ben Schreckinger

For eons, all manner of animals have lived their lives according to the cycles of the Earth’s rotation on its axis, the moon’s orbit around the Earth, and the Earth’s orbit around the sun. But why do we observe the week? The pattern of living on a seven-day cycle—with one or two of those days set aside for rest—is a relative novelty. Only in the past few centuries, with Western colonization of most of the world, have the majority of human societies adopted it.

The case for the week was never airtight. It’s now weak and getting weaker. Most Westerners no longer observe a weekly Sabbath, and the coordination advantages of keeping everyone on the same uniform schedule have evaporated. So why does this arbitrary time cycle still dictate the rhythm of our lives? Is it time to abolish the week and find a better way to structure time?

Another Year Zero freak. His vision is an anchro-libertarian dream. Instead of the 7 day week let each individual or institution define their own week. If Google wants a 10 day week like the French Revolutionaries let them have it. One slight problem is the author leaves out the impact of laws and regulations based on the 7-days week, for example, 40 hour work week.

Why the seven day week? Something to do with the Bible? The Sabbath?

Nah.

They already tried this, during the French Revolution.

They did away with the 60-minute hour, the 24-hour day, the 7-day week, the 12 months. Everything became powers of ten. Out with the old, in with the new.

You can see how that stood the test of time.

These liberals. Ignorance is strength, indeed.

But but according to the author it was those damn Christians, mainly Catholics, who resisted the glorious rationality of the 10 day calender. Since we are now a post-Christian society we can easily jettison the 7-day week.

What kind of nonsense is this? The week was instituted by God himself and goes back as far as recorded history, the Bible, in the first chapter of Genesis.

However, this kind of nonsense is prophesied to be implemented in the last days (Daniel 7:25), "but not yet."

Touch my seven day week, and that hand won’t touch anything again.

The 10 day week of the French Revolution worked out so well, didn't it?

And what's this arbitrary thing of making everyone abide by a tyrannical decimal system just because man was blessed with 10 fingers and 10 toes each? How about the sloths and the undulates and all the species with fewer digits?

Exactly! It’s an indirect attack on Christianity...yet again! Now that the gay marriage battle is almost won, time to shift to something else Christian to attack!

I’m surprised that the way we count years from the birth of Christ hasn’t been attacked yet. We are talking about some of the most vicious anti-Christian haters I have ever seen!

They have done that partially by using the Before Common Era/Common Era (BCE/CE) instead of BC/AD.

5 day week, two days off, 3-10 hr days.

Work hard play hard.

Also election day would be a forced national holiday.

It already has. AD is now CE. BC is now BCE.

But why do we observe the week?

Because God says so.

Neil Verwey, the late founder of Japan Mission, once told the story about a Japanese woman who was grateful for the God who had established Sundays, since prior to Christianity coming to Japan, there were no weeks, and people were lucky to get a day off once a month. Christianity liberates, wherever it's tried.

I've seen this suggestion crop up every few years since I was a toddler.
Somehow, a 10-day week, a 100-second minute and a 100-minute hour and whatnot was supposed to be easier.
It was unnecessary then, even more unnecessary now when computers are doing all the calculations.

I believe it is based on the lunar cycles.

You know, howling at the full moon and all that...

I have been working 12 hour rotating modified shifts for decades. Four on, three off, three on, two off, and after each work cluster the shift changes from AM to PM and back. Once during the month you get six days off straight. You get two weekends off per month this way, and the company only needs two scheduled shifts instead of three each day. It requires four teams. For those with a 24/7 365 days a year employer, it’s the best schedule I’ve ever worked.

Going to base ten did make calculations easier.

I’m going to guess that humans work best if we have a day of rest every seven days, and that going nine days before getting our day of rest will tire us out too much.

It's exactly BECAUSE the 7 day week was a creation mandate that it is being opposed. Just like every other creation mandate.

forget about it. It is bad enough now with people who don’t know when to give it a rest. I work with freaks who don’t know anything about business hours. I’m not playing.
