Google is building a car without a steering wheel.

Sergey Brin, co-founder of the technology titan, told a Southern California tech conference that Google will make 100 prototype cars that drive themselves—and therefore do not need a wheel. Or brake and accelerator pedals.

Instead, there are buttons for go and stop.

A combination of sensors and computing power takes the driving from there. …

You know that 20+ queue of cars you have to wait in to turn onto the interstate ramp in the morning? Or that long line of cars in one lane as you approach a construction coned section? The one where several people drive up in the open lane and cut in because some drivers won’t keep with the flow?

The google car is the one that leaves the biggest gap permitting just about everybody to skirt the line.

I’ve seen a product development video and the google car even lets bicyclist BEHIND it to pass.

No steering wheel. Or brake.

What could go wrong?

A car that drives itself, why does this make me uneasy...

Just seems like a big metaphor for the continued abdication of Self Determination.

Let BigGov or somebody else do all the heavy lifting. Just call me when it's dinner time.

Yeah, makes me uneasy too, what if they are hacked and you go over a cliff or a bridge to no where? I don’t think we will ever see an AI capable of driving a car safely. I know human operators can be flawed but at least a car under human control can make judgement calls much better than a robot or computer. These cars scare me.

EMP also affects the engine’s electrical systems, unless you have sufficient insulation. The only kind of car that would work without fail after an EMP strike is a fully-mechanical one, such as a steam-powered car.

I have it on good authority that the Google cars require an up-to-date version of Google Maps to run.
