Poorna is a member of India's lowest Dalit caste previously known as 'untouchables'

A 13-year-old poor Indian schoolgirl has become the youngest female to summit Mount Everest, following a difficult and dangerous climb from China's Tibetan side, her expedition organiser said Monday.

Malavath Poorna, the daughter of a tribal farm labourer, reached the top of the world's highest peak on Sunday after climbing from the Tibetan side of the mountain, said Mohammed Ansari, technical coordinator for her team.

Poorna and 16-year-old friend S Anand Kumar, a member of India's lowest Dalit caste previously known as "untouchables", climbed the mountain with ten Nepalese guides, before hoisting the Indian flag, he said.

Even though the two young Dalit teens were government sponsored, what an incredible achievement. They certainly have my admiration.

It’s hard to imagine that any 13 yr old would have the leg or lung power to do that no matter how hard they trained.

Very hard, but a hard life might make for early maturing and strength.

“a member of India’s lowest Dalit caste previously known as “untouchables”, climbed the mountain with ten Nepalese guides, before hoisting the Indian flag, he said.”

10 guides for 2 climbers? Wow, “achievement” on the backs of others.

Interesting...this heroic girl’s name is Poorna.

The third highest Himalayan peak is called Annapurna. There is Hindu meaning to both names.

“Very hard, but a hard life might make for early maturing and strength.”

especially if she ate hormone laced chicken. But being from India I doubt it.

Poorna means full. Annapurna means full-of-grains.

I am having hard time believing poor maligned untouchables able to spend thousands of dollars to hire 10 guides to Everest just does not make sense. They must have had extensive training... where is the money coming from?

May be they are rich untouchables, like Soros?

Not many climbers solo Everest. Even the “big name” climbers took large teams with them. And even *with* a ten-sherpa team, Everest is a huge accomplishment for a 13-yo girl.

The north route is arguably the most challenging too.

I believe the article said the expedition was government sponsored or, at least the kids were.

Forgot to mention, the “guides”, i.e. Sherpas, handle navigation on the mountain, since they tend to know the routes up the peak, and carry supplies. They’re generally considered necessary for any Everest climb, but especially so for the more difficult China side, and more especially so for two young women who are going to be exerting themselves to the fullest just to get themselves up the mountain, never mind carrying the Oxy tanks, medical supplies, food, shelter, and other necessities.

rock climbing, spelunking, diving, shooting the rapids in tubes, pretty much name it.

I wouldn’t assume that because we all haven’t done an assisted climb up everest, that we’ve all done nothing.
