Richard Martinez, father of slain Santa Barbara student, plans to meet killer's parents as he slams pols over gun control The grieving dad said in an interview with the Daily News that politicians are 'spineless and craven' when it comes to ending gun violence: 'When is enough enough?' Martinez lost his son Christopher Michaels-Martinez, 20, in the May 23 shooting carried out by madman Elliot Rodger.

I sympathize with this guy and the loss of his son, but he is completely off base here. He mentions absolutely nothing about mental health which is the REAL reason his son was killed. The problem is not an inanimate object - The problem is how mental health is dealt with in this country.

The police were called in to check. They didn’t check to see if the killer had purchased guns. It’s another case of the gov not doing its job, then everyone saying we need more laws. The US doesn’t need more laws since it seems authorities are incapable of enforcing the ones already in place.

We need gun, knife, and BMW control. Now.

After that, the crazy will find another tool as long as mental illness is ignored.

BS - Mental health will never solve this. Getting more people trained and armed is the only real solution.

Something was deeply disturbing in the way we first saw this guy...the SPEED and the VITRIOL with which he reacted in the media.....

Then I found out he used to be a criminal defense attorney. So that explained a lot.

His son was killed in a “gun free zone”

Let's drug up every boy at fourteen that'll solve the problem!

Are you one of us who suspects that IS the problem?

Elliot Rodger’s father didn’t teach him him how to be humble and be a man. No law it going to fix that.

That explains a lot. And make no mistake: The left is going to have this guy on every major news show for the next year, they LOVE a guy like this, especially as we near the elections, and 100% of the focus will be on guns and the NRA, connecting the Republicans to guns and the NRA and how evil they all are blah blah blah, and absolutely nothing will be said about why an absolute psychopath was allowed to run amok for months on end when his own parents tried to have him committed. I remember when I was a kid growing up in the early 60s, the “men in the white coats” would come and take someone away who was acting irrational. I remember clear as a bell them taking someone away in a straight jacket, and they actually had “white coats” just like the cliche. You NEVER see that anymore. But what I DO see quite often, is people acting completely insane in the street.

Yo, Mr. Martinez, the nutjob stabbed his fist three victims to death. If one of them had had a gun, your child might be alive today.

What a rectum.

So how many criminals did he put back on the streets because of technicalities and skirting the law. How many deaths is he responsible for? Did any of his clients carry illegal guns? Maybe he should look in the mirror first.

Great info. Thanks.

I wonder how many other people's children are dead because of people he helped keep on the streets.

Not only the drugs, which have more adverse side-effects than the supposed "good" they do, but also the lack of attempt to train those with issues to cope and overcome them w/o the drugs. If I was going to school today (instead of the '50s/'60s), I would be under several diagnoses that resemble ADDs/ADDHD (or whatever they are) and they would be wanting to drug me up too. I wasn't molly-coddled and was taught that I could stay aware of what was going on and learn to control my behavior. Today's society is too lazy and everyone wants the "designer drug solution".

You're right. These massacres are occurring at an alarming rate. Something is making people go off like that. If we could find and treat the underlying causes, we might not have so much carnage.

For all the science and technology out there, the brain is still poorly understood. Far too many illnesses are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed. What treatments exist are often inappropriate and ineffective. And the severely deranged are allowed to walk among us thanks to do-gooders who are too worried about the rights of the mentally ill to even consider the threat to the safety of the rest of us.

Unfortunately, thanks to Obamacare, any further research and development of solutions will be stifled. This is what happens under government-run health care. The resources and incentives to find cures or effective treatment of any illness are lost. Way to go Obama.

Locally we have the family of a victim and the family of the killer standing together for greater influence in forcing hospitalization of mentally ill family members. Nobody knows unusual behavior better than a family member.

The killer’s family had repeatedly tried unsuccessfully to have their adult son involuntarily hospitalized because he was a danger to himself and others. He ended up killing an elderly neighbor with a hammer. They found him wearing her dress with her head in a bag. He said she was emanating rays at him.

No doubt. Being a current/former “criminal” defense lawyer (rhymes with liar) he knows how to play to the “jury” which will now be the few remaining idiots that watch any of the majors. Problem is, like the lyin’king himself, they have pens and phones. I too find it a little disconcerting that he almost instantly jumped on firearms. The only homicides where the perp isn’t the culprit is with firearms. Odd huh? No chance that he would try to blame the tire manufacturer, the oil maker, the power steering fluid maker, the knife manufacturer. You get the gist of it I know.
