First Lady Michelle Obama has agreed to sponsor a future submarine named after her home state that will be staffed by an all-female crew.
The White House has announced that Mrs Obama has accepted an invitation to be the backer of the USS Illinois, a Virginia-class submarine being built in Groton, Connecticut, and Newport News, Virginia.
The new nuclear-powered boat is expected to join the fleet in late 2015.

It will be interesting to see if they can pass the Damage Control Requirements required for all crewmen for submarine duty.
I bet they waive them as being to ‘gender’ specific as regards to upper body strength.
Michelle Obama, the ship sponsor, will provide remarks and authenticate the keel by chalking her initials onto a metal plate. Her initials will then be welded to the plate, which will be permanently affixed to the submarine.
Instead of initials, how about using the chalk to outline her.....never mind.
I just looked up where we are on women and subs and found out that the most sub experience any of the crew will have is 18 months.
Would any of you submariners go near it?

But this is BS about an all female crew.
An initial pre-commissioning crew began forming in June 2013. They are not all female.
The Keel laying just occurred and Michelle Obama is the sponsor...but the crew which is already working with the builder is not all female.

The crew that will man the vessel after launch will definitely not be all female.

pick a name, any name, because right now all of them that were named before 2012 were all-male subs
