Delegates to the United Auto Workers convention have voted to raise dues by 25 percent to shore up the unions finances, the first increase in 47 years.
Representatives from local unions across the nation approved the increase with a show of hands, raising dues from two hours of pay per month to 2½ hours. [ ]
It will raise about $15 million per year for the union, but the average longtime auto worker who makes just over $28 per hour will pay around $14 more per month.
Annual dues revenue has dropped nearly 40 percent since 2006 to $115 million as membership dropped 27 percent. The strike fund has fallen from more than $914 million in 2005 to about $627 million at the end of last year.

President Bob King says the increase is needed for the union to build power and keep up efforts to organize Southern auto plants. The bulk of the unions workers are employed by the Detroit Three automakersChrysler, Ford Motor Co. and General Motors Co.IOW, to try to find more workers to leech off while failing to represent them as much as they have failed to represent the employees of the Big Three that no longer have jobs.
The increase would go to bolster the strike fund, but $25 million would be transferred from the strike fund to the operating fund.
The unions are suffering because they no longer serve the interests of their members but have become extensions of the Democrat Party. What is good for the worked comes in second place to what is good for the Democrat Party. Workers know this and that is why the flee the unions when they can. That is why the unions and the Democrat Party want card check so badly and go into fits concerning right to work laws.

The article is not correct in my opinion. As the union member receives a percentage hourly wage increase every year, then union dues also increase by the percentage raise. So dues have increased in much less than 47 years, probably every year.

They are following the democratic party strategy. When you don’t have enough money, take more from those you represent.
This will help their membership. Obviously they need to start negotiating for higher wages to offset the necessary % increase of their dues.

Actually the bulk of the UAW these days has nothing to do with making cars at all.
About half are medical and public employees.
That was my first reaction as well. What has happened is that the percentage which goes to the union is higher.
But then, my head explodes over the fallacy of baseline budgeting.
The worst thing that has happened to the UAW in history was getting ownership in GM to support pensions. As a voting member of GM’s ownership, the UAW had an interest in the company’s success. They had to own the wages and benefits.
Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I believe the UAW negotiated the biggest concessions in its history after being handed a controlling stake in GM (maybe it was only certain locals... I should do some more research).

The article’s claiming that they take two hours’ pay as dues every month rather than a percentage. Even if that isn’t correct, hourly wage increases would represent an increase in revenue all right, although losing members represents a loss, ironically.
And libs wonder why the VW plant in Tennessee told them where to go.
Oh BS. The union has raised dues every time their serfs got a new contract.
They have just raised the percentage of dues they are stealing.
