Sixteen percent of all teachers are considered chronically absent, missing 18 days or more per year, a new study said.

A Think Tank in Washington, D.C. looked at 234,000 teachers in 40 of the country's largest school districts. It found teachers miss an average of 11 days.

In Sacramento, more than 51 percent of teachers are chronically absent. In San Francisco, the number is more than 41 percent.

And in San Jose, it is about 45 percent.

To be fair, they work very late hours and get almost no vacation time.

I would imagine that pregnancies would skew the numbers up up up. keep in mind, teachers begin pretty young and have an average of two children each. That gets you 40 days right there. I would not read too much into this study.

Geez. Teachers get a lot of built in time off. They get time off for Christmas vacation, Easter vacation, all the federal holidays. Some do work year round, if they are involved with summer school. But, add it all up, and they work many weeks per year less than full time employees in other lines of work.

On top of getting lots of built in time off, it’s stunning to think that they are taking sick days when they aren’t really sick.

I retire this year after 32 years of teaching.

I have accumulated 217 sick days. If would have been quite a bit more but in those years I had to have back surgery and get my gall bladder taken out during emergency surgery. That's well over $85,000, in payroll.

And that is in addition to summer breaks.

To be even “fairer”, they “work” about 8 1/2-9 months per year, have tremendous benefits, get “tenure”, have tremendous retirement.

To be fair, they work very late hours and get almost no vacation time.

They also can't get fired, get regular pay increases (even if their performance sucks) and can hold a captive audience to brainwash with their dogma.

I don't begrudge the good teachers out there, that work hard, stay politically unbiased and seek to be decent role models to youth, but I have a problem with teachers who are the exact opposite of what I just described.

Its another reason why education must be organized and funded at the most local level possible.

Even the average of 11 seems like a high degree of absenteeism

Don’t feel bad, I retired at 45 with 2200 sick hours. Had I worked til 60 I’d have had over 4500 hrs easily. 2 years pay. We got an unbelievable 21 sick days a year. 4 weeks vacation. 1 week administration leave. 3 days funeral leave each occurrence, thankfully no one in my immediate or distant family died in all that time. PLUS we worked 4 half days then got 4 straight days off. When I first got the job, I couldn’t understand why anyone would need vacation time. I could easily switch my 4 half days on with the fellas and get 12 days in a row off. Now why did I need vacation time? It was so easy to carry all your vacation time too.
But, trust me I live in Texas now and life is fabulous living with like minded individuals as myself. Before moving here I had to register as a Democrat because 1/2 the time the Republican party was about 15% the populous and didn’t even run a candidate. Kind of the opposite here in Texas. Long live the Tea Party. Hopefully my city will survive enough that I don’t lose my pension.
