‘Edge of Tomorrow’ Reviews: Tom Cruise Kills It

“Edge of Tomorrow” isn't expected to be the box office smash its $178 million budget suggests Warner Bros. hoped it would be, but at least audiences can expect one of the best big-budget movies in theaters this summer.

Critics love Tom Cruise's latest action film, which blends science fiction elements with a premise borrowed from classic Bill Murray comedy “Groundhog Day.” Like Murray, Cruise plays a man who is forced to “Live. Die. Repeat” for what must feel like an eternity, except instead of picking up women and causing trouble in a sleepy Pennsylvania town most famous for a rodent, Cruise must team up with a female war hero (Emily Blunt) to figure out how to stop an alien race from wiping out humanity.

My daughter and I saw the trailer when we went to see Spider Man and she’s excited to see the movie. I’m not a fan of violence but it looked like there was some humor and romance, too. We very, very rarely go to movies and don’t have cable tv, but my daughter loves the Marvel stuff and I’ve come to appreciate Stan Lee for his wisdom on life, love and the world.

I’ve seen the Jersey Boys show live, three times. I didn’t realize that they were making a movie version. Woo! Something to look forward to seeing. :-)

You want nuts? Listen to this: Tom Cruise talks about his religion.

So is his job trying to figure out how to stop the aliens who are doing the re-spawning thing?

Tom Cruise can be just fine in the right role - his last sci-fi film “Oblivion” was pretty good, I thought. Just my 2 cents.

How was the show? I take since you’ve seen it three times, you must like it.

Yes, Clint was announced as the director last year. Should be good!

It’s nothing new. I heard a discussion on the James Bond franchise years ago. There’s an inverse relationship between the quality of the script/plot/story, and the amount of special effects.

He’s nuts and so is his cult religion.

“...Are you going to see this?...”

Not in theater. I won’t pay the exorbitant $$$$ theater prices.

I’ll wait till it’s on cable. No biggie.

I saw the previews of this yesterday when I saw the new X Men movie, which by the way is very good, and I thought it looked very interesting and will definitely go see it this weekend.

It looks like it could be good. “Oblivion” was pretty good, too, if not a little predictable. I don’t mind Tom Cruise when he’s on the screen, but I wouldn’t leave him alone with my kids.

I guess you trade one for the other. I keep thinking of The Caine Mutiny, the scene where The Caine was in the storm looked like it was filmed in a bathtub, but what a great story. I’ll side with a great story or plot. If you consider the movie Jaws as having special effects (it was 1975), I’d say that was the right balance, it had both.

I saw Jersey Boys in Vegas.

Highly recommend it!

My wife wanted to see it, I figured I woudn’t like it but went anyway. Best time I ever had. I was tapping my toes along with everybody else. If it’s still playing in Vegas when we go back there, we are going to see it again.

Excellent! Good to hear.

I’ve seen Frankie Valli twice, he’s good, especially considering he’s pushing 80.

From what I’ve seen of these modern fx-oriented action films, they no longer even seem to be movies at all anymore. More like hyperkinetic, animated video-games. Indeed, when I observe them, I can’t even mentally process them like real “movies.” They just seem like a cartoonish barrage, best left ignored.

Cruise shouldn’t even be left alone with his OWN kids, considering the cult he is in.

There just isn’t anything worse than a Tom Cruise Sci Fi Film. The last invasion film he did turned my face red.
