Sitting in traffic is not only a nuisance, it raises stress levels, causes us to breathe in harmful smog and makes us late for work. And, according to a new survey, the problem is only getting worse with almost every one of America's most clogged cities having more traffic in 2013 compared with 2012. It is perhaps no surprise to find that Los Angeles is still the most congested city in the U.S. For every hour travelled during rush hour, a whopping 39 minutes will be spent in traffic.

Florida and Texas cities are dropping fast, I guess decades of infrastructure improvements are starting to pay off.
Noticed DC dropped relatively. Perhaps completing the Springfield Spaghetti Bowl and the HOV/HOT lanes on parts of the Beltway in VA are helping too.
The DC corridor is moving faster. I can travel from the Warrenton exit to DC at 40 to 45mph during rush hour.
Seriously, it has improved.
But, but, but...they have trains! And subways! And busses!

Someone in mboffice complained to me how bad 281 traffic going into San Antonio is. I told her to get back to me when she tries going through the Lincoln Tunnel at 4pm on a Friday afternoon.
Wonder what their criteria are? It can't be city limits versus metro, bec. then LA would fall out of first place.

Disclaimer: Life long residents of only Indianapolis are unfamiliar with what bad traffic really is. When they say “traffic jam” they mean traffic has slowed to below the posted speed limit.
Not Austin. They had rather spend money on art festivals and banning plastic bags. The traffic here is bad and getting worse with all the interlopers moving here.
The next big crisis will be water and they don’t get it.

One of the growing bottlenecks in Californicator land is the HOV lane now controlled by liberals in their Piuses.
While thousands are tied up in traffic the libs buzz by in their Piuses and other tax supported so called electric cars.
Also, the restrictions on the number of Fast Track lanes to keep union toll takers working causes massive delays.
A few years ago, some rare common sense happened with Caltrans that has eliminated a lot of traffic on one of the freeways across the Delta to and from the East Bay and Gay Frisco.
They widened the bridge across the straights and stopped charging a toll to go south into the high traffic areas.
Then, they really helped the commuters with Fast Track lanes after you crossed the bridge on 580 including some very fast north bound lanes for Fast Track users. Now on most week days, even during rush hours, if you are in the left lanes, you can cruise through the toll booths into 780 northbound at 60+ mph.
I hate the Houston traffic, but have been in far worse. L.A. is definitely the worst I’ve seen.
The flat terrain helps with the smooth traffic flow.
You can build roads anywhere, unlike Pittsburgh where everything funnels to "The Point".
The Point is, among other things, where the three rivers meet, where the French built Ft. Duquense which led to the French and Indian War and where Lewis & Clark launched their flatboats for their famous expedition into the newly acquired Louisiana Purchase. So it has been a site of traffic congestion for a long, long time.
So since then heavy traffic means a good business climate to me. I can stand it.
The rounbdabout also serves a Darwinian purpose in that it would remove the inept from the road.
I have conference calls with my LA and California counter parts. We’ve learned not to schedule them at 8:00 or 9:00 California time. It’s always Afternoon California time which is 3:30-4:00 my time.
Why? We haven’t decided if it’s the traffic, or the California culture. It’s sort of like Hispanic culture. Being fashionably late is normal. If a party starts at 7:00, you show up at 8:00 to make yourself seem important.
That’s fine in the social Hollywood world, but doesn’t make for good business partners.
It’s the weather, you fool! Don’t you know the weather is THERE and they wish you were beautiful? :)
We hear that from some CA cousins all the time.
The survey obviously wasn't taken on days when there is an inch and a half of snow on the ground.
As an Ottawa local I’m not at all surprised we made the top 10. Every summer, at least two major streets are under construction, as well as significant portions of the major (only, really) east-west freeway - which, right now, is reduced to a single lane immediately east of the downtown core.
