Rep. Tom Cole ‘strongly opposed’ to housing illegal alien minors at Ft. Sill
Twitchy ^ | 06/06/2014 | Twitchy Staff

...the White House is dealing with what it calls an “urgent humanitarian situation” — tens of thousands of unaccompanied minors crossing the U.S.-Mexico border. Rep. Tom Cole of Oklahoma voiced his opposition to the practice of housing these children at Fort Sill in Lawton, Okla.

In a statement, he writes:

Fort Sill Military Base in Lawton is expected to begin housing at least 600 unaccompanied minors who illegally immigrated to the United States. Since fiscal year 2011, the number of these individuals, usually from Central America, has grown from 6,000 to 66,000 last year. By next year, this number is expected to climb even higher to 127,000.

Using Fort Sill and other military bases to house illegal immigrants is simply an inappropriate use of military facilities. Moreover, I am concerned that what begins as an emergency measure could, over time, evolve into a permanent juvenile detention center for those who have entered the country illegally. This could result in a confusion of missions at what is the one of America’s premier military installations.

Confusion of missions at America's military installations is Obama's goal.

Let us pause a moment and give thanks to Republicans like Rick Perry who fought so valiantly against the physical fence that would have kept every single one of these illegals out of America, had it been built.

And let us further remember all the Freepers who continue to promote him as a potential candidate for 2026.

Isn't Cole, though, a squish on illegal immigration -- an amnesty supporter?

If so, he's playing a NIMBY card here.

FEMA called on to shelter unaccompanied children crossing border... http://twitchy.com/2014/06/02/fema-called-on-to-shelter-unaccompanied-children-crossing-border/

We the citizens and taxpayers have to pay for this in more ways than one. Going from 6,000 illegal minors a few years ago to and expected 127,000 next year because Obama wants to make them voters is unsustainable.

How could those buses NOT have been stopped at the border?

"How could those buses NOT have been stopped at the border?"

My question, exactly!! It is ridiculous and outrageous that literally bus-loads of "minors", thousands of less-than-18-year-olds, are getting into the country, swarming the border unimpeded...it's almost unimaginable! How can this be permitted to go on?!

As someone else said, it's simply not sustainable, not to mention against all our laws. Even worse if true, I also heard that some of these "children" are accompanied by their mothers, who are also allowed to stay and are given every assistance (food, shelter, transportation)...unbelievable.

Perhaps our new motto should be, "women and children first"...to be turned around and sent back!!! Sheesh. I mean, why NOW? and HOW? are they getting here and across the border?! in such greatly increased numbers??

True, but if there is a fence we spent a few billion building, the people paying for it might want it used as intended regardless of what Liberals say. The whole mentality of the country would be different.

And yes, Holder and anyone he knows should be impeached.

Sorry to see you still beating the drum on Perry, Norm. The Texas-Mexico border makes up 1,254 miles of the 1,900-mile-long U.S.-Mexico border. It was told a thousand times how expensive it would be to build such a fence and how Obama refused all of Perry's calls for help.

And this disproves your quote above;

But - it was nice to be remembered, lol, and if Rick Perry was now the President we would still be in AMERICA.

Perry’s lack of willingness to stand behind the fence construction most assuredly helped encourage more illegals to stop by for tea and benefits. Because there was nothing to stop them, Thanks in part, to Rick’s help.

He is on record as being against physical fencing. Texas is a major entry point for illegals.

All the excuses people can come up with do not change these facts. If you are proud to be remembered as someone that supported the guy, that speaks for itself.

I wasn’t aware the fence was actually built. Not the unguarded cow fence that’s there, the real one that was proposed.

It’s easy to blame Obama and the liberals. And they deserve blame. you know who else deserves blame? Republicans who are supposed to stop them from wrecking the country. That’s why we elect them isn’t it?

I expect liberals to try destroying the constitution. It’s a given that they work tirelessly. I want people who will stop them, not help them and give them what they want.

I’d like that. Wouldn’t you? Then don’t support people who give them what they want, then run to the nearest microphone crying the blues that big bad Barry don’t play fair.

I don’t know how much wall/fence has been put up but much of it is in segments. The ranchers and landowners fight against it as much as others fight for it. It divides off much of their property for roads and their livestock can’t get to the river water.

Perry said he wanted more border guards and drones and you know that Obama has put many restrictions on the border Patrol and ICE. I believe Homeland Security changed many rules.

By the way Norm, I wasn’t ‘crying’ about anything, I get tired of one issue rants against a man who runs a state that is larger than many countries, and runs it well. Those, who want perfection, will never get it.

How about the issue where he tried forcing Guardasil over parental objections? Or the issue where he tried to crony in a superhighway fro Drug Central Mexico?

I’m not a one issue guy. There are PLENTY of issues with Perry that place him closer to his former party than to Conservatism.

If you like your governor, good. But he, like my governor in AZ, sucks for the country overall.

He is on record as being against physical fencing.

The border is a river.

You want to fence it off and cede it to Mexico?

The river drives the agriculture of the entire border region.

By all means secure the border but "rah rah fence!" is far too simplistic a solution.

Over the years, any number of freepers have thought up a variety of ways to deal with the river and access to it. If we can figure it out, I am quite certain that actual engineers can do the job. They figured out how to get to the moon, they figured out how to dam the Colorado (on which I live) and this corner of AZ is a maze of irrigation waterways.

We can do it if we want to do it. I don’t care how many thousand miles it is. I don’t care about terrain. We build interstates THROUGH mountains of solid rock. We run physical cable across oceans. We steer drills thousands of feet underground. We can figure this out in short order and make it happen.

The plans I saw were not simple. No, putting up a cow fence is all of useless. I agree. But a real fence, like some of the proposals, would be quite effective. And doable if we want to.

China built the great wall 3000 years ago. It worked well. I think we can do better. AND accommodate the river.

The thing with the cows/water needs is that it is dog simple to solve. It is basic irrigation that happens every day throughout the world. Simple water diversion.

Ultimately there is no need for it to be either/or. We can have both.

That said, if it ever came down to it, we just take the River, DMZ the thing and if we feel generous, let them have some of the water.

Not that THAT would ever happen.

Indeed, even a putz like me could dope out several ways to handle it.

I tend to bring it up when folks seem to think it's just a matter of building a nice wall.

It ain't that simple. Not impossible, but a wall won't get it by itself.

That's OUR water and we ain't giving it up.

Just build the wall on the other side of the river. See? It is simple ;)

Seriously though, there are myrad ways to deal with the water thing. Even if we build the fence on our side rather than straight down the middle of the water, we can bring that water in. AND still defend/use the land between. That’s where the cameras, crossings ect come in.

A 100 foot steel wall sunk 200 feet down and down the middle would be nice, but no, it won’t happen. But it doesn’t have to. The border patrol now playing hide and seek at best could man crossings and camera centers along the length. Sensors are already out there. More can be planted.

So many ways to skin the cat.

Well, if I were king...

We’d have a series of camps (read: trailers) along the river
each serving a few dozen deer stands 4 or 500 yards apart.

Texans would participate in a lottery to donate a week of vacation time to manning these posts, 3 x 8 hour shifts per each.

The State would provision these posts and provide night vision gear to them what needs it.

An advertising budget would be cleared to promote these operations, mostly on Univision.

Hell of a good time and service to the community.

But I ain’t king, and for good reason.
