Rashad McCants, the second-leading scorer on the North Carolina basketball team that won the 2004-05 national title, told ESPN's "Outside the Lines" that tutors wrote his term papers, he rarely went to class for about half his time at UNC, and he remained able to play largely because he took bogus classes designed to keep athletes academically eligible.
McCants told "Outside the Lines" that he could have been academically ineligible to play during the championship season had he not been provided the assistance. Further, he said head basketball coach Roy Williams knew about the "paper class" system at UNC. The so-called paper classes didn't require students to go to class; rather, students were required to submit only one term paper to receive a grade.

compared to other athletic programs I have been around on the business side, like MU, KU is a chapel.
FWIW - I graduated UNC Business School in '77 between Bruce Buckley and Walter Davis. I sat next to Walter in about half of my business classes. He earned that degree. Bruce was a Rhodes Scholar. I did not play basketball but knew about half the team on any given year.
IIRC - Dean Smith had the greatest number of Academic All Americans of any coach in the NCAA.

It could be that he’s running out of money. I am not sure but he may be bitter because he’s not set for life because he blew a lot of his money. If he has to rely on a degree in African Studies, it’s a useless piece of paper unless he lands a government job or a job in education.
African Studies is as much an advanced degree program as Africa is a developed continent.

Let colleges openly pay players. They have a value...and the colleges are acting as a free farm system for the NFL. One knee blowout and a multimillion dollar future is toast, given to a college that makes those millions from a star player. Heck, let them unionize and know the value of their stardom. It will help them get a handle on their NFL value...or lack of value.

Had this been Kentucky the fury of ESPN and the NCAA would be raining down still upon the program. The NCAA is like the IRS they make up the rules as they go and have those the hate and love and UNC along with KU get lots of winks and blinks but no serious penalties.
How do you imagine a person with an IQ of 83 and combined SATs of 750 manages at a place like Chapel Hill?
Come on! The whole NCAA is engaging in massive and continuous fraud about these "students". I don't give two sh*ts about it one way or the other - but it's probably better for the culture to own up to it, stop forcing the athletes to pretend to go to class, and pay them a decent salary.
Of course, if there are SEC recruits with IQs of 110 and SATs of 1150 and above who WANT to go to college and are able to do so, they should be allowed to. How many SEC starters like that do you think there are?
