Shelby Osborne: Football is her passion and she joins the thin ranks of women in men's college football. Most women have played as kickers. Is Shelby Osborne creating a new normal?
When Shelby Osborne walks onto the football field this fall, she'll be treading on ground few women have dared to walk.
Fewer than a dozen women have played college football on a men's team. But this week, Osborne made history when she signed a letter of intent to play football with Campbellsville University in Kentucky as a defensive back, the same position she played in high school.
No woman has played that position in men's college football.
Her job will be to guard against the pass, and the run. She must be fleet of foot, agile, and able to take a hit. Defensive back can be a physically demanding position. But so can combat in the US Army, where women are increasingly showing they have the physical attributes necessary to get the job done.

If there’s women on a men’s team it’s a co-ed team.
I realize this is Campbellsville University...Not a SEC team...
Hope she doesn't get hurt...
Yes, she is, but the writer is off:

I guess the writer hasn’t heard about the dumbing-down of military standards.
Refraining from jokes....can’t help it....what position will she really play?...does this include touch football...stopping....stopping...
It is a stunt and a stupid one at that.
A girl could be an extra point and short field goal kicker. They have nearly the same strength in their legs as boys but have less than 50% of the upper body strength.
She will never play in a game where there is any question of the outcome.
Combat, tackle football—gee, there’s nothing women can’t do.
Next up: Women writing their names in the snow ...... heh
First sweep, she’ll be broken in half.
And when she has to keep up with an End running fly?
they’ve changed the rules many times in the army to get some women to pass tests the elites want them to pass.
in football they won’t. she’s going to get physically damaged and there will be lawsuits.
on average 70% leg strength, half upper body strength. the best have the O2 lung capacity of a 50 year old man.
“a new normal?”
hahaha.... that is hilarious
And for the record, more power to her. If a person wants to put themselves out for a sport, they have my respect. If she isn't able to do it, that will become obvious, and if she is able to do it, that's great.
I have no doubt that somewhere in the world, there is a girl who would make the top 100 on some decent college football team. The odds dictate it -- there is enough variation in ability that SOME girl somewhere is going to be muscular enough to do it. And nothing should stop them.
......but then reality reared its ugly head.
Dumbing down and easing up on mil standards.
Maybe I’ve been in the dark, but I can not think of one who can meet the “standard” military standard. Where are they in combat? Still as support, correct?
Who the hell thinks this is a good idea?
If I were this young lady’s Dad I would be very concerned with her getting seriously run over by one of those 300 pound guys. Maybe in High School they knew to watch out for her, in college the guys are auditioning for the Pros.
Even a DIII team will run roughshod over any high school team. Players are very strong and very fast. Many could play D-I if among other reasons they had better coaching from Pop Warner through high school.
