Shelby Osborne: College football's first female defensive back

Shelby Osborne: Football is her passion and she joins the thin ranks of women in men's college football. Most women have played as kickers. Is Shelby Osborne creating a new normal?

When Shelby Osborne walks onto the football field this fall, she'll be treading on ground few women have dared to walk.

Fewer than a dozen women have played college football on a men's team. But this week, Osborne made history when she signed a letter of intent to play football with Campbellsville University in Kentucky – as a defensive back, the same position she played in high school.

No woman has played that position in men's college football.

Her job will be to guard against the pass, and the run. She must be fleet of foot, agile, and able to take a hit. Defensive back can be a physically demanding position. But so can combat in the US Army, where women are increasingly showing they have the physical attributes necessary to get the job done.

Oh, just give the fundamental transformers a second.

Football standards are already under fire, and wherever this cute little thing chooses to play football, the standards there will fall like a boulder to accomodate Miss Muffin’s frame, weight and condition. Nails and cuticle trims may be in, on the QT.

I guess she’ll have one thing in common with Michael Sam, they both have boyfriends.

You just know the WRs are going to dread routes across the middle — in fear of a ferocious hit from that fierce D-back.

After her concussion, we’ll be hearing about her family’s lawsuit against the university and the critics complaining she should never have been allowed to play.

We had a woman in our men’s corporate basketball league. Same result.

Idiots, that little girl is going to get herself hurt.

Just ain't enough of her there to take a hit trying to bring down a wide receiver or worse, a running back at full speed.

The arms and neck just ain't there on her.

Had a family member who played football when she was younger. She was a star quarterback up until middle school.

She didn't make it 2 weeks into the start of high school football.

She was a great athlete and talented quarterback, but the guys had grown up in the summer between middle and high school and were so much stronger and faster that she got so beat up so bad she had to quit before she was permanently injured and had to quit track and field and sports entirely.

She moved on to girls team sports and did great and was also state champion in several track events .

The reality is that very few women can compete with men physically in areas where strength, speed, agility and endurance are required.

It's just simple biology .

As far as the whole , “Ginger Rodgers did everything Fred Astaire did - backwards and in heels”, go watch Fred and Ginger dance on YouTube.

Ginger was fabulous but Fred was in a league of his own when it came to timing and athleticism.

Contact sports are clearly a rare place for girls, although a few do get into wrestling.

Soccer is another sport where you would think a few girls could compete.

There’s a theory that you don’t see much cross-over in some sports specifically because there are female teams already for those sports. Football would then be one place where there is no female equivalent.

I’m not sure why a girl would play men’s tennis, given that there is a thriving competition in women’s tennis in both college and professionally, and the money is equal, and if you are good enough to beat SOME men, you are likely going to be able to beat almost all the women.

Well, at the lower levels (middle and high school) I would actually expect the best girls to be playing men, in order to hone their skills since playing the typical girls would never get them ready for real competition.

And for the record, almost any decently athletic girl could have taken me in tennis at any time. My wife regularly defeated me in tennis matches, until I “ruined” her game with my sloppy play, left-handedness, and annoying use of accidental drop shots when i mis-hit the ball.

That is a danger, but until that happens, I don’t see a need to attack her for wanting to play a sport where there is no female version. I enjoyed football, and I imagine some girls would enjoy it as well, and they have every right to compete on the playing field with the guys.

I agree they should not change the rules at all though.

I was just going to say: Did this just happen in this News Cycle? What happened to the “concussion” theme? Did it just morph into a “head-trauma-equality” theme?

Tennis is one of those games girls do well in. There are lots of girls who can beat a lot of men but even there the difference can be huge.

Chris Evert was married to a World Class player from England. I think he was ranked something like 100 in the world.

At an interview some libber asked her how her husband liked being married to a girl who could beat him in tennis. Chrissy told her that she couldn’t beat her husband. In fact she said if he really concentrated, she would not win a point.

""I could care less if I ever played a down, as long as I am a part of the team"

So are they just putting her on the team for PR, knowing that she could never possibly play? Or has she shown any ability to even be of help on the scrub team in practice? My guess is she couldn't even be a Rudy-level scrub, and will be on the team, slowing everyone down in sprints, and forcing players to take it easy on her in the tackling drills.

I notice a complete lack of objective information about size, weight and 40 time. If a 5 foot 6, 130 lb. guy came out, he'd be a joke. As I think this is.

And, just to add, I have no problem with a girl playing on a boys team. But, she better be as good as the guys, and not just be added on the team as a stunt. That I do not agree with. If there was ever a girl who won a starting position and did go, I'd say, "You go, girl!" I have yet to meet or hear of a single female who could do it, though, from 10th grade on. Moochelle might come close.

“Soccer is another sport where you would think a few girls could compete.”

Really? I sort of have the opposite impression, although I suppose it has a better chance of happening in soccer at the highest level than football or basketball.

I always thought best chance for a female in a big sport is a knuckleball relief pitcher. Fielding the position/covering first could be the biggest hurdle, besides the inherent difficulty of throwing a knuckleball to major leaguers for strikes. There are pitchers who are no great shakes defensively now but if she is ridiculously slow in comparison to everyone else it might be a problem. On the other hand it’s pretty hard to bunt the flutterball, even if it is only mid-60mph.

Correct. Long ago, there was a word for "women's champion" in marathons - it used to be "65th place."

“She has every right ...”

Does she?

If anomaly now rules man, then men certainly deserve what they are getting. They have abdicated their place and obviously the country is in decline, full of women running the schools, the churches, thick in government.
