A year ago, Manny Machado was the toast of baseball.
He was an All-Star and got solid mention in the MVP voting at just 21 years old.
Now, in the eyes of the A's anyway, he's just toast.
The A's beat Machado's Baltimore Orioles 11-1 Sunday. Machado knocked the A's Derek Norris out of the game in the sixth inning by twice winging the catcher with his backswing.
Then in the eighth inning, Machado didn't like a first pitch inside from the A's Fernando Abad. His reaction was to swing and release the bat after a second inside pitch, the bat flying in the general direction of third base.
That, the A's contend, was as intentional as anything they've seen all season, and the benches cleared. And although Machado denied it, the umpires sided with Oakland and threw him out of the game.
"That was worst temper tantrum I've probably ever seen on a baseball field," winning pitcher Scott Kazmir said. "He tried to say that he lost the bat. That clearly wasn't the case."

Sorry to hear that.
Lifelong O’s fan here.
Manny started the year on the disabled list and has had trouble getting it started this year. He allowed his frustrations to get the best of him. Not good. Probably the first time ever that he’s had to deal with any adversity. I have no doubt he’ll grow up.
But in a 162 game season, this will be ancient history next week.
He had nothing on Bert Campaneris.
