Iran Goalkeeping Coach, American Dan Gaspar

Here is the wikipedia article on the Iran National Football/Soccer Team as if any of us care but it was surprising to see an American on the staff. Seeing how Carlos Quieroz the manager is Portuguese (actually born in Portuguese Mozambique) and Gaspar seems to be American of Portuguese descent, maybe it is not as odd as it appears.

I think it was 2006, I read a little bit of an Iran Soccer Forum originating out of Southern California. Most of those participants must have been expats, refugees from Iran but they still supported the National team who for the record, are called "Team Melli", that's their nickname.

The wikipedia article seems to say some of the players for the National Team of Iran got into a bit of trouble supporting of all people, the Green Party a few years ago.

Anyway, their manager is suppose to be real good.

Yes BeadCounter you are right. The historical inaccuracies in the film ‘Game of Their Lives’ are jarring. To depict Blackpool’s own Stan Mortensen as essentially ‘a sneering toff’ was ludicrous. The fantasy about why the great Sir Stanley Matthews missed the game is also insulting. I guess the film makers would call it ‘artistic license.’ As a lover of football/soccer and a historian, I call it something else.

Police say Brazil coach's nephew killed in crash
(AP) — Police say the 48-year-old nephew of Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari has been killed in a car accident just two days before the team's World Cup opener.

Highway police in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul said businessman Tarcisio Joao Schneider, the son of one of Scolari's sisters, died in a crash Tuesday morning.

Officer Carlos Borges told The Associated Press that the car Schneider was driving collided head-on with a truck on the opposite lane.

Nishimura of Japan to referee World Cup opener
Japanese referee Yuichi Nishimura will handle the opening game of the World Cup between Brazil and Croatia as FIFA picked the same official who oversaw the Brazilians' elimination in the last tournament in South Africa.

FIFA also selected Nicola Rizzoli of Italy to officiate the hotly-anticipated Group B game between world champion Spain and the Netherlands, a rematch of the ill-tempered final four years ago.
