Kitten nearly dies from vegan diet

A KITTEN has almost died after its owners fed it a strict vegan diet.

The horrific case at a North Melbourne animal hospital has prompted a warning about the dangers of people "forcing ideologies" on their pets.

Lort Smith Animal Hospital veterinarian Leanne Pinfold said the kitten was brought in this month by its owners, who were believed to be vegan.

She said the kitten's diet of potatoes, rice milk and pasta had caused it to become critically ill.

"It was extremely weak and collapsed when it came in. It was almost non-responsive," Dr Pinfold said.

The kitten was given fluids via a drip, placed on a heat pad and fed meat.

Omnivores can live on veggies; however, maybe not the healthiest diet.

Cats require taurine, which cannot be synthesized and is found in meat. Humans don’t have that requirement. Sounds like owner is an ignorant idealogue.

The only way a omnivore can live healthily on vegetables alone is if they supplement their diet with foods that are not found in their local environment. The same holds true if they eat a totally carnivore diet, but in that case they would have to eat organ meats that most people can’t (or won’t willingly) eat to get the nutrients that are not present in the muscle fibers they eat normally.

Cats are obligate carnivores, they can and sometimes do eat some vegetables (I have a cat who adores mushrooms fried in garlic and butter) but they can’t digest them well, and they do not get the nutrients they need from them.

I care for three or four grown cats and seven kittens, still nursing. I buy only dry cat food by the kilo at a local feed store. The kittens are old enough to eat the dry food.

Rush brought up this very subject during the early years of his show in response to a story about some nutbar turning his dog into a vegan. He pointed out that dogs mostly only eat vegetables when they’re sick, to make themselves throw up to feel better and expel something bad they ate. He then went on to mention that if some moron tried that diet on a cat, it would die. He mentioned that cats live off of a protein that’s only found in meat.

More crazies. You can’t go against nature folks. Cats are carnivores.

A vegan diet isn’t even healthy for humans, and we have need for less meat in our diets than cats.

Poor kitten, to be abused in such a way.
