While Cedar Point was closed because of a water main break over the weekend, 16 of the theme park's employees were busy getting arrested.
Police from the park and the city of Sandusky say they arrested 16 people after a melee broke out in the employee recreation center early Sunday.
Jail records say the employees were charged with aggravated rioting and disorderly conduct. At least one was also charged with assaulting a police officer. 13 of them are from Michigan; three live in Ohio.
Police responded at about 3:15 a.m. Sunday to Cedar Point Commons, which is the park employees' housing area.
The park reopened Monday after being closed Saturday and Sunday due to a water main break in the city of Sandusky.
Arrested for disorderly conduct and aggravated rioting were:
Lawanda Harris, 21, of Detroit Cashia Moyer, 19, of Youngstown Lavon Epps, 19, of Flint, Mich. Jarrett Stennis, 22, of Southfield, Mich. Joshua Brown, 32, of Ypsilanti, Mich. Marquise Nicholson, 19, of Detroit DeShaun Harris, 20, of Flint, Mich. Galen Hobdy, 20, of Canton Brandon Williams, 21, of Flint, Mich. Curtis Prentice, 23, of Canton, also charged with resisting arrest Kyreese Whitacker, 21, of Flint, Mich. Dajon Williams, 19, of Roseville, Mich. Sterling Jenkins, 24, of Flint., Mich. Rick Miles, 23, of Flint., Mich. James Ewing, 21, of Detroit Ja'Quan Pittman, 22, of Flint, Mich.
aggravated rioting —LOL, as opposed to mild rioting?
More Amish live in Ohio than in any other state. Just sayin’ . . .
poor Ja’Quan. Would hate to go through life with a name with an apostrophe, a name which nobody can spell or pronounce correctly. And now he has a police record.
Yea! My old home state wins!
I remember the first time I went to The Point. Around 1952. It still had that Twenties/Thirties charm about it. Times have sure changed! I liked Euclid Beach Park better though.
Plus I bet it’s hell finding those little name tag license plates for your bike...
Yo, Kyreese. What you in for, homie?
Yo, mild rioting!
At least it isn’t La-A — pronounced: (La Dash A).
If you read the article you would see that the Amish have moved in from Michigan from summer jobs at the Point.
Well, at least it was a melee, and not a fracas...
Lawanda, lafonda... shashanda.... Ja’Quan...Cyrese, or Tyrese...
hmmm....I haven’t a clue as to why this fight started.
Such odd names...
Last time I was there they had friendly summer employees from eastern Europe.
You are so right. Even without a police record, JaQuan is going to have trouble being called for job interviews. It's not fair, but it is reality.
There is a reason why the eastern European immigrants of old gave their American children English names. The father might have been János, but junior was named John.
They still had a lot of those when I went a couple years ago. Most of the associates are really great, IMO, and Cedar Point is the best roller-coaster park anywhere near me.
From other links:
Sandusky police arrived at the rec center to find Cedar Point officers struggling with a man and several other men trying to get at the officers.
Several other Cedar Point officers were struggling with three other men, who were swinging their arms at officers.
Another man, who refused to leave the area, then began pushing an officer.
Sandusky police called for backup and then observed three Cedar Point officers struggling with another man.
A short time later, police observed an officer struggling with three more men. One of them eventually had to be Tasered three times before he would comply with officers’ order to get on the ground.
All 16 were taken to the Erie County Jail.
Last trip to the park was three summers ago. Had a great time. Took our exchange students there and our Chinese student took her first ride on a roller coaster (we arrived on Hallowed Weekends) at 10PM. She had no idea she was being seated in a 205’ wooden roller coaster when we just walked into the ride area and told her to sit down. Silly me for having my wife sit in the seat behind her. I can only imagine the youths cleaning up after the ride was over. That was our first and LAST ride of the evening. Oh, the memories!
He could be a Narn.
Holder’s people, methinks. Danged Amish, just can’t behave themselves.
Just another skirmish in the Toledo strip war.
Forget it Jake, its Toledo.
Last time I was there, a lot of the park employees were eastern European kids of some sort.
Not to mention the poor b@stards named Jarrett, Joshua, Galen, Brandon, Curtis, James, Rick and Sterling.
Euclid Beach, wow I went there as a kid.
Like many things in Cleveland, it’s only a memory now.
Yes, it’s the best roller coaster park anywhere. We used to go every summer when I first got married. Been at least a decade since I’ve been now. Still have an old “Millennium Force” t-shirt somewhere.
Euclid Beach! It was SO MUCH better than Cedar Point...The Thriller, Racing Coasters, Over the Falls and the Flying Turns...I still have dreams about riding them with my Dad.
And there were trees to sit under when it got hot and the frozen custard was to die for.
Cedar Point was just concrete, mediocre rides and crappy food.
If Obama had sons...
You probably know they’ve added a lot of new stuff since your last visit. Prices are up a bit, but still a bargain in my view, and you can still grab a beer at a few places in the park, including the saloon in Frontier. :)
Those days are behind me now. The wife has back problems and the roller coaster gene somehow skipped a generation with my daughter.
It was fun, though.
If you want a good look at the fine folks involved,go to www.sanduskyregister.com.I’m sure they were just upset because choir practice ran a bit late.
Cashia may have career opportunities on Wall Street or at the Federal Reserve.
I loved the Fun House at Euclid Beach. The sinning tunnel,, the spinning floor disks! And the guy blowing girls skirts up? Bwaaaa! That guy would be arrested today!
He's only a letter away from a future in the mustard business.
Aggravated usually means with a weapon, or some aggravating circumstance like that.
If not for the police’s quick response it might have turned into a full-blown brouhaha.
yeah, the dash don’t be silent
Thirteen of those arrested were from Michigan, only three were from Ohio. It appears they had something else in common. ;)
I worked there when I was in college, met my husband there. :)
When I worked there, mid 70’s it was mostly college students from OH, MI, and PA and they were predominantly white.
“The sinning tunnel,”??????
Freudian slip there????? “Spinning tunnel.”
I don’t think osha would allow any of those fun things anymore! Also, there was the Gypsy Fortune Teller machine, just like the one in “Big.”
When I worked there the seasonal employees were mostly college students ages 18-20. One of the people arrested is in his 30’s. Instead of seasonal, many of those on this list should be working year round back home. What do these “adults” do the rest of the year? Everyone I knew there that was seasonal left The Point at season’s end to go back to school.
Remember Laughing Sal who stood outside the Fun House?
They were only arrested because they are black./s
...tried to burn the Blue Streak?
“Remember Laughing Sal”
I do now! Thanks for reminding me!
FWIW, I can’t agree with making fun of a person’s name.
