A woman hiking at Black Canyon Falls was bitten by a rattlesnake on Wednesday morning.
Fire officials said the 24-year-old woman was hiking near the 2130 block of Black Canyon Road in Ramona when she was bitten on the foot just before noon.
Witnesses said the woman had been surprised by a rattlesnake tucked in behind a rock. They said the woman was fortunate the incident happened in a spot with good cell service, as she was able to quickly call 911.
A Mercy Air helicopter arrived 30 minutes later and took the hiker to Pomerado Hospital.
It wasn’t immediately known the severity of the snake bite.\

What a shock. A wild rattlesnake left on a trail in Southern California. Don’t they have people to take care of those things?

And in reality, there are very few states that don't have rattlesnakes. My own area, the hill country of western Wisconsin, is or used to be one of the best (or worst) rattlesnake areas in the country. But despite hiking the bluffs of the area a lot when I was younger, I never saw one rattlesnake. I only once came across a dead one while hiking in a state park when I was older.
But one time on a nature hike with a nationally known snake expert, the expert walked up to a boulder on a hillside, stuck his snake under the rock, and pulled out two rattlesnakes. Then I knew that all the time I was hiking those bluffs as a child, the snakes were hiding under the boulders.
Man, that is a nasty visual........
Woman bites snake is a story.
I guess that was about a $10,000 hike. I hope she has good insurance!
Ha, ha, thanks for the catch. I meant to say snake stick. Yes, sticking your snake under a rock can lead to nasty surprises.
Okay, but how is the snake?
I remember the crazy Crocodile Hunter was in San Diego to hunt down 10 of the most dangerous snakes. This is a guy that has screwed around with spitting cobras, mambas, the Australian brown snake..... and he left the hiking trail when he came onto a young western diamondback. Said those young rattlers could not be trusted as they will bite without the usual “tell” and empty their venom sacs.
First time I ever heard even a smidgen of fearful respect in his voice, bless his soul.
What I want to know is how Ramona managed to put the snake up her you-know-what.

Saw him on an outcropping come across a large Western Diamondback. He was shaken.

Based on her age I bet she was wearing hiking sandals, Five Fingers, running/tennis shoes, or maybe even Crocs.
My brother and I used to kill rattlesnakes with machetes back in the ‘60s when we were teenagers. Killed and skinned quite a few and once even ate one (tastes like chicken :)).
On one occasion back then I was out hunting rabbits with my Remington Nylon 66. It was a cold drizzly day with heavy overcast and as I was stalking a likely bush I stepped on a coiled rattler. I could feel the spongy feeling under my boot and stepped back and shot it in the head. Just then a rabbit broke from the bush and I pulled the trigger again hitting the rabbit in the neck. A rattlesnake and rabbit, all in one moment.
Lucky for me it was cold and the snake was sluggish or it would have gotten me for sure.
We hunted in South Texas for years and saw/killed a lot of rattlesnakes. I shot one with my deer rifle and it blew the snake up in the air. I have killed lots of snakes but that was my only rattler. I hate snakes!

Not many people can say they’ve been hit by a rattler and even fewer can say they’ve been hit 4 times. My first bite was a big rattler hit me right behind the left knee, second was in the right shoulder, third was in the right butt cheeck and the fourth was my left index finger. No helicopters or ambulances just drove to the ER. I’ll kill around 75 rattlers here on the ranch before it starts getting cold and they den up. That seems to be the yearly average.

Since you are so experienced with rattlers I'll ask you if you have ever seen what I saw. I was walking back to the camp from the tree where I had been sitting waiting for a big buck (he never came).
I startled the snake who was heading down the trail toward me. He jumped up in the air and started wiggling while he danced around on his tail. He was not a huge snake only about 3 to 4 feet long.
One of the famous western artist (can't think of his name right now) did a painting of Indians and rattlesnakes and the snakes were doing what I saw the snake do. Have you ever seen this snake action?
