A Cleveland County man caring for his mentally disabled cousin was arrested Wednesday after police say he assaulted and castrated him.
Charles Newton, 50, faces several charges, including assault by strangulation, abuse of a disabled person inflicting serious injury, assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious bodily injury, assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, kidnapping and malicious castration.
Newton let investigators inside upon arrival, authorities said. Investigators then found Newton's cousin, who was heavily beaten over what deputies say could have been several days.
The man was taken to Cleveland Regional Medical Center and later transported to Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte.
Newton taken to the Cleveland County Detention center and placed under a $150,000 bond.
"This is a sad situation that has occurred," Cleveland County Sheriff Alan Norman said in a release. "The investigation shows at this time that the victim could have been assaulted over a number of days. Thank God someone called when they did or this could have been a homicide investigation."

If they’re severely retarded, just put a tight rubber band around their scrotum. Then after the things are beyond repair, take them to the hospital to have the castration done properly. No one’s to know that they didn’t do it to themselves.
And what wasn’t said, was likely the reason he castrated the cousin, was because he was a non-stop masturbator, which can get really aggravating in a hurry.
I think a retarded man would feel pain as excruciating as you would, if someone did that to you.
You ought to report abuse on yourself and ask the mods to pull your comment. It is revolting.
I would challenge you to find any other kind.
You may not care for it, but the truth is that things of that sort happen frequently by caregivers who say they are “at their wits end”, because of the behavior of their charges.
Institutionally is just as bad. Mentally ill people are difficult at best to take care of. If they have some behavior that is particularly grotesque, it takes an extremely strong caregiver not to respond with unacceptable aggression or passive aggression.
I’d wondered if he caught the guy trying to rape his wife/a kid.
That shouldn’t have ever been approved for a vanity license tag. It wouldn’t have been had it been read the way you’re reading it. The intention was “A NU START,” not “ANUS TART.”
It says whatever one reads it as saying, which may or may not be at odds with the intent of the person to whom the tag was issued.
Yes, I'm fine now, and I can finally sing as a high tenor!
