LA Named As Finalist To Host 2024 Summer Olympics

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The city of Los Angeles is on a short-list of four finalists to potentially host the 2024 Summer Olympic Games, officials announced Friday.

San Francisco, Boston and Washington, D.C., landed the other three spots on the United States Olympic Committee list of potential bidders for the game following its board of directors meeting earlier this week outside Boston.

If Los Angeles is chosen to make the U.S. bid, and is ultimately chosen as host, it would become the first American city to host the Games three times, tying it with London as the only worldwide city to do so. LA hosted the Summer Olympics in 1932 and 1984.

No U.S. city has hosted the Olympics since Atlanta in 1996.

Mayor Eric Garcetti hailed the Committee’s decision, saying in a statement: “Los Angeles is the ideal Olympic city, with endless diversity, attractions and scenic beauty I look forward to working with the USOC to ensure we present the strongest possible bid for our nation.”

The cost of hosting an Olympic Games could exceed $3 billion, USOC Chief Executive Officer Scott Blackmun said last year when the organization sent out feelers to mayors of 35 U.S. cities considered potential hosts.

Host cities are required to have ample resources to provide at least 45,000 hotel rooms, an Olympic Village with rooms for 16,500 people and a 5,000-person capacity dining area, space for 15,000 media and broadcast representatives, an international airport able to handle thousands of international travelers per day, public transportation to venues and roadway closures

Between the expense of illegals and that every city that’s ever hosted the games loses money, LA just put itself on the fast track to financial ruin.

Chicago has been selected to host the drive by shooting event.

It's modernized Biathlon.

Are they going to allow gangbangers to enter the shooting events?

Might as well add drug-smuggling, drug-selling, and organized gang rapes to the events.

LA = Los Assholes

Is that when a CNN anchor seemed in disbelief and stunned by the vote?

“Chicago has developed a large pool of participants. This could put them over the top for the event.”

But doesn’t the odd “sideways style” of shooting negatively affect accuracy?

“LA has world class facilities, held the Olympics in 1984 with excellence.”

That was a long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. If you think THAT was a great event, you should have seen Chicago’s Colombian Exposition. Now THAT was an event.

“1984 was in another century...”

And the LA Olympics in 1984 were excellent.

There was no need to spend taxpayer money, for world class facilities were already there. In fact they had a choice between multiple sites.

Coliseum, Sports Arena, Dodger stadium, USC, UCLA to name a few.

Ronald Reagan opened the games.

ElLay and the State of CA are both drowning in debt already.

How does anyone on the USOC possibly believe they can afford $3 billion, when they are close to being bankrupt?

Great news for Dallas.

Yep. Great that Dallas wasn’t even contending!

In late ‘80s or early ‘90s, I was a Mgr. at a major defense contractor in DFW. All in Mgt. positions had to attend two big meetings pushing the DFW Metro area (Dallas, Fort Worth, Denton) for a Summer Olympics. ...There were Mayors, major current and past pro sports figures, State and Federal politicians pushing the idea to us, using lots of computer graphics showing the “Olympic Village” and all the venues.

Fortunately, Texans refused to buy-in to the scheme because they knew it would be nothing more than a MONEY PIT!

Well, you may be right that Dallas was never a contender, but they were trying for the 2024 olympics.

The big drawback to Dallas was the weather. Just too hot. Although, unlike Atlanta, it’s not nearly as humid. But all the facilities are there.
