It's a father-and-son adventure that Ron and Paul Jarvis won't soon forget.

The Atlanta, Ga. natives were in B.C. for a three-day fishing trip, the first time 19-year-old Paul Jarvis had ever fished with his dad Ron.

On their first day fishing, Paul Jarvis hooked one of the largest white sturgeon ever caught on the Fraser River, according to Great River Fishing Adventures.

On its site, Great Rivers says the big fish was 361 cm long and 145 cm in girth, adding that "the sturgeon caught would weigh over 880 pounds." Sturgeon are a protected species and was released after the two posed for pictures with it.

“In the first few minutes I had it on the line, I couldn’t believe the weight and power of the fish. I am a big guy and I could barely hold on to the rod let alone begin to reel the fish," Paul said. "Managing that fish became a true father and son challenge. As I battled the fish, my dad handed me water to keep hydrated and he even held on to my fighting belt and harness. When I saw that head come out of the water it was massive.”

Dad and son battled with the monster for about an hour and the sturgeon was brought to shore by the boat’s lead guide Dean Werk.

“I was looking to make the first fishing trip with my son memorable,” says Ron Jarvis. “This fishing trip has been a great bonding experience. It’s a great Father’s Day weekend and a unique adventure we’ll never forget.”

Great River says this is the fourth giant sturgeon caught in less than two years. In July 2012, British tourists Michael and Margaret Snell caught a 12 ft 4” sturgeon on the Fraser River and in September of that year, Norm Daley of Kamloops caught an 11 ft 8” sturgeon.

Werk, the owner of Great River Fishing Adventures, witnessed all the record catches.

“It is really exciting to see a fourth monster fish like this within such a short time period. It is proof that our conservation efforts are successful and that this is a sustainable fishery as we have seen increase in population for past two years," he said.

Like a (pallid) sturgeon

Weird Al Yankovic

I finally made it through fish school. Somehow I made it throu-ou-ou-ou-ough. But I'm just a fry, and I still make a mistake or two-oo-oo. I was lost, almost squashed In the big muddy’s water. Now I'm trying to avoid, Yeah, I'm trying to avoid a big river otter.

hey! like a sturgeon spawning for the very first time. like a stur-ur-ur-urgeon. making caviar is my line.

I've got a long projecting snout, An asymmetric tail, Cartilaginous skeleton, And bony plates for scales. I've got a dream of a stream Where I can clean out a place to spawn. And I'll spew my insides out, Yeah, I'll spew my insides out until my eggs are all gone.

hey! like a sturgeon spawning for the very first time. like a stur-ur-ur-urgeon, i've got caviar on my mind. oh, oh, oh, oh . . . .

Since it’s not in the boat I call foul. I think a case could be made for the sturgeon saying, “Look at these two idiots I just picked up!”
