Computer Question - Icons and Win98
Self ^ | 06/15/14 | 50s Dad

For the first time in ages, I am refurbing an arcade machine. I have done nine of them, but it has been a while. Anyway, I use an old Win98 PC to emulate arcade games in the old case, and I have forgotten if this can be done...I am trying to idiot proof the machine so after I get it set up, people won't be messing with the OS. I would like to remove the My Computer and Recycle Bin icons from the desktop in Win98. Worst case, I could edit a blank Icon and rename them with blanks, but I can't help feel there is a more elegent way, and it has been so long since my last machine, I may have forgotten how.

Make the desktop wider than the physical screen/custom resolution, then slide the icons over to the non displayed area.

Win98 had Guest/Admin privileges, right? I don’t remember. Set yourself up as the admin, and make everyone else a guest.

Some games didn’t like working under a limited user account.
Win98 had two choices, limited or admin.
Game companies smewhere in there said “ we will require these services from the os”, thus breaking your ability to properly secure the machine.

I think you can edit what shows on the desktop under user accounts in control panel.
Don’t rightly recall with win98.

How about: left-click near the item(s) and slide over and then hold it until the icon(s) is/are selected, then Shift-Delete to remove them permanently? Or is W98 not allowing you to do that somehow?

A bit of time ago, granted, but didn't you also have the ability to right-click on the Win icon in W98 in the menu bar and bring up the Desktop folder? Where you could delete the Shortcut icons?

If you can see the icons in the Desktop folder in Windows Explorer, you might be able to simply right click the icons, cut them, then paste them into a different folder. Sorry but I no longer have a Win98 box to check that.

The best resource for W98 users is the forum at http://www.msfn.org/board/forum/8-windows-9x-me/

If nothing else, you might want to grab the Maximus-Decim universal USB storage drivers for W98, which are free.

You might also want to look into KernelEx. I don't use it, but many do.
