2014 NBA Finals: San Antonio Spurs By The Numbers [A Model Sports Franchise]
Forbes ^ | 06/16/2014 | Kurt Badenhausen,

Posted on 06/16/2014 7:21:48 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

The San Antonio Spurs clinched their fifth NBA title in franchise history Sunday night, and the championships have all come since the team drafted Tim Duncan with the first overall pick in the 1997 NBA draft. The five titles are the fourth most in NBA behind only the Boston Celtics (17), Los Angeles Lakers (16) and Chicago Bulls (6).

Third-year forward Kawhi Leonard won the NBA Finals MVP. The Spurs have the highest winning percentage in major pro sports since 1997 and the team has not won fewer than 60% of its game in any season since drafting Duncan.

The trio of Duncan, Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker under the guidance of coach Gregg Popovich has won more playoff games than any trio of players in NBA history. It is a staggering run in an era of free agency and onerous luxury taxes where building a dynasty is more challenging than ever.

The Spurs have been the NBA’s model NBA franchise over the past two decades. They posted operating profits of a record $39 million last season despite playing in the NBA’s fourth smallest market. Ratings for Spurs games on Fox Sports Southwest were up 15% this year and ranked second in the NBA.

Peter Holt led an ownership group that bought the Spurs in 1996 for a grossed-up value of $76 million. Holt’s family made its fortune running the largest Caterpillar CAT -0.41% dealership in the U.S. Forbes valued the team at $660 million in January, but the value has jumped even further after the recent sales of the Milwaukee Bucks ($550 million) and Los Angeles Clippers ($2 billion).

Funny. I am not sure how they got notice the night before when it worked until shortly before game time. Then again, the air conditioning in Miami must have blown only on the Spurs as well. Tell it as well to the Celtics and Lakers for the 1984 finals. As Jordan found out in his career early, it takes more than one player to win a championship.

“but this year’s team may be the greatest of all time.”

I don’t think so. The spurs played team ball, excellent defense and here is the biggie, had 5 guys on the floor at all times all of whom could shoot.

A lot of championship teams had this quality.

Magic, Kareem, Worthy, Fisher, and Byron Scott with Cooper off the bench were a team, all played good d and all could shoot.

The old Knicks with Frazier, Barnett, Debussere, Bradley, Lucas and cazzie russell, john stallworth off the bench. They played team ball, great D and everyone could shoot.

Same goes for Bird, Parrish, D Johnson, Ainge, McHale.

Same for the Pistons of Laimbeer, aguire/dantley, Dumars, Isaih, and Rodman, Salley and vinnie Johnson off the Bench.

When you played them, you couldn’t double anyone because the open man would kill you and on offense, it was a real challenge because they all played good individual defense and excellent team defense too.

Rodman couldn’t shoot. But he was one hell of a defensive player and a monster on the boards (And he was one dirty player too, who would pull down your pants while defending you ). I never liked the Pistons.

I’m still going to give Jackson the edge on sheer percentage. 20 years, no missed playoffs, 13 trips to the finals, 11 wins, those are just scary numbers. And yeah he coached a lot of truly great players, who combine for 1 championship win with coaches not named Phil.

I remember the playoff game against Utah where Jordan pushed the defender with his forearm, stepped back and sank the J.

Everyone said what a great shot. It was the game winner so the refs had already gone for beer.

There was a call last night in the paint when LeBron was going inside. The replay showed that no one touched him. Of course he got two free throws.

How many plays do we see where the offensive guy barrels into the defender and no call.

Only saw one play last night in which the player took 4 steps before the shot.

It’s this kind of star protection which rankles me.
