Skip to comments.KSAT Ball Hog Blog: Spurs' titles tainted?
Posted on 06/16/2014 8:07:41 AM PDT by Reagan‹berAlles
Grantland.com editor-in-chief and ESPN everything Bill Simmons wrote a column last Friday titled "The Footnote Title." It was a list of 20 NBA champions that won the title due to the misfortune of others whether it be injuries, refs, suspensions, guys hitting fire extinguishers a la Amare, etc. This year's Derrick Rose injury is an example.
Here's where you may ask: RJ how many Spurs titles made the list? How about all four in the top 14! I understand if a list like this is done, it has to have teams on it, but all four Spurs title teams?
Might as well put a giant asterisk next to the Spurs logo.
What is this person babbling about?
You jelly much?
Something you wanna dribble out of that little mouth of yours boy?
May, 2012? Time to get over it.
How bad does the Eastern media hate Texas?
Texas in in the east from where I sit and they are a tainted team.
Are you RJ Marquez?
ridiculous... it is all part of the game... it is all part of each and every game that gets you to the play-offs and then to the championship... in any sport... you cannot disregard a win just because of "misfortunes," especially in championships where you play a number of games--best out of...
this is "sour grapes..."
Living in the Houston area, we’d gladly take an asterisk next to any team championship!!
This just in: USA win over Germany in 1945 “tainted”
I had no dog in the fight....call em like it is...can’t handle the truth then butt out boy.
Yes, it’s true, you are an idiot.
Boy? You can’t read.
So are you saying, someone needs to go to the Jelly School? I hear there is one in Colorado :>
Ceasar’s victory over Vercingetorix in 52 B.C. ‘tainted,’ deserves ‘giant asterisk’
Bill Simmons knows lots about basketball, BUT...
here he is talking out of his butt!
By Bill’s thinking, Brady’s championships should have an asterisk, since it took the old QB whom he replaced, Bledsoe I think, to get Brady into his first Super Bowl!
Injuries and incidents are part of sports. Championship teams work through and around these to still become Champions! There is no asterisk for making it to the top, unless you CHEATED (i.e., Barry Bonds)!!!
Arguing with a fanboy is futile.
Of course. Losers blame everything and everybody...but themselves.
I think we should get a copy of Sterlings investigation report of each team. We might come up with Spurs who got into fights in HS. Spurs who abandoned their national team to play in the US and on and on.
Meanwhile, here on earth, the Spurs are the best TEAM in basketball. Emphasis on team. A welcome win for those who enjoy that part of sports as opposed to the super-egos often found on teams like Miami.
BTW not a Spurs fan, but if my team can’t win, then good for them.
Send madboy off to the jelly school now!!!
Show me any game, much less any 7-game series, that does not deserve an asterisk by this logic. Injuries, bad calls, and the unforseen are a part of every single game. The difference is, so teams accept them with grace and overcome, and some teams whine about them.
now I’ll be depressed all summer.
Something you wanna dribble out of that little mouth of yours boy?
What FR REALLY needs is more internet tough guys. Thanks for joining!
it's like a football fan saying, "if we didn't have all those turnovers, we would have won." a friend actually said that to me once when his Dallas Cowboys lost the NFC Championship...
I still have my sign from demonstrating at the Broward County courthouse in 2000!
The whole concept of “tainted wins” is creation of desperate sports writers who can’t think of anything better to write but still want to collect their paycheck. The Spurs won, deal with it.
Tainted is tainted. Truth is truth.
The truth is only morons think a win is tainted. Time to get your big girl panties on and accept reality, sometimes teams you don’t like get the trophy.
Based on this “logic”, the ‘93 Phillies was ROBBED!!! The Blue Jays need an * next to that title since Mitch “Wild Thing” Williams was truly wild.
Such “misfortune” for the Phillies and their fans...
Sheesh, what sour grapes...others have said what needs to be said.
Teams overcome adversity, even if that adversity resides on their team (Williams), if they don’t, they lose. Quite simple really.
Were you part of the infamous Brooks Brother Riot of 2000?
Those guys are my heroes!
Good morning, I hope you are doing well.
I lost my Soreloserman sign. If anyone sees it, I want it back.
Everyone knows it’s the truth and I’m no the first person to mention it.
It’s the truth and you need to take the tampon out and deal with it you pussy.
"Jim from Rio Linda. Go!"
"Uh, hey Alex. Thanks for taking my call. Long time listener. Many time caller. Hey, uh.....don't you think the Spurs are, like, a tainted team? I mean, you know...tainted"
"WTF are you talking about? And we go to Melvin in Cleveland. Go!"
"The Series situation has developed not necessarily to Miami's advantage"
If insipid whining douches make up “everyone” then yes “everyone” knows it. Meanwhile the people who are smart enough to tie their owns shoes see 4 dominating wins by one team and a squeak through by the other and no tainting. Suck it up buttercup.
I think the “thugs in Brooks Brothers suits” were actually at the Dade County courthouse. I was at Broward County. But thanks, just the same. It was an amazing weekend. I had never done anything like that before, and it was the first time I was aware of FR. We were squared off in the street against the much smaller Gore forces, separated by a no-man’s-land patrolled by cops. Some guy would would run behind the Gore crowd and hold up a big Free Republic sign for the TV cameras.
Author is sourcing Bill Simmons. Enough said.
Yeah, the silly part of sports. Made sillier in the sports where the championship is a series. I can almost accept it in football where one or two bad calls can make a team’s path to victory easier. But in a series that’s one game, what about the rest, especially because you know the refs will be doing makeup calls in the next game.
The pathetic part is this taint talk really devalues the losers more than the winners. The Spurs get to put another trophy in the case, they don’t really care what anybody says. But all this whining and excuse mongering ignores the fact that the Heat made 4 championship rounds in a row, that’s an amazing accomplishment, sure they went 2-2, but it’s still truly impressive.
Entering the 2014 Finals, the 2000-01 Lakers were the last team to win a championship after ranking outside the top 10 in defensive efficiency in the regular season.
They still are.
