Scientists discover massive ocean of water 400 miles underground

Researchers at Northwestern University have found evidence for a massive reservoir of water deep within the Earth's mantle. The reservoir, which is said to be three times the volume of the oceans on the surface, is contained within highly-pressurized rock known as ringwoodite. The scientists hope that their findings, recently published in the journal Science, can shed light on where Earth's oceans came from.

THREE TIMES THE VOLUME OF THE OCEANS ON EARTH'S SURFACE

The team, led by mineralogist Steven Jacobsen, used an array of 2000 seismometers to study how seismic waves generated by earthquakes move through the Earth's interior. The waves' speed changed depending on the type of rock they pass through, and wet ringwoodite has a particular effect on wave velocity. Jacobsen was able to reproduce

I wonder what critters are swimming around down there? How do we tap it? would the water be salty or fresh?

If this is true, then something down there has to be a lot denser than we thought, as the calculated of mass of the Earth is a given (orbital calculation).

I bet it's a lot more than three times the surface ocean volume.

The oceans are just a thin sheet of water on a huge globe.

Of course, this can’t be true, as the settled science before this research occurred doesn’t support it.

From the article: “The reservoir, which is said to be three times the volume of the oceans on the surface, is contained within highly-pressurized rock known as ringwoodite.” So it’s not “an ocean” but contained within rock. Ironically enough, volcanic magma depends on water for its molten state. That’s why so many volcanos are found adjacent to plate subduction zones. I agree it seems counterintuitive but matter and materials behave differently under great heat and pressure than they do on the surface. The granite you may have in your kitchen sink requires water to form and the speed of cooling determines the size of the included crystals. “Water, water everywhere and not a drop to spare.”

It’s chemically-bound water in solid form in a substance called Ringwoodite. It doesn’t pour or flow like water.

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, the seventeenth day of the month, on that day all the fountains of the great deep were broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened. ~Genesis 7 verse 11

Every day we learn that the Bible is not just a story.

I wouldn’t attribute that to Noah’s Flood. This “water” doesn’t gush or flow. I believe Noah’s flood and the fountains of the deep have been pretty well exhausted and used up. It’s all in the oceans now.

Remember when you ran away
And I got on my knees and begged
You not to leave
Because I’d go berserk?
Well!
You left me anyhow and then
The days got worse and worse
And now you see I’ve gone
Completely out of my mind.

And

They’re coming to take me away, Ha-ha
They’re coming to take me away, Ho-ho
Hee-hee-haa-haa
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And I’ll be happy to see those
Nice young men in their clean white coats and
They’re coming to take me away, ha-ha!

You thought it was a joke
and so you laughed, you laughed,
when I had said that losing you
would make me flip my lid.
Right?
You know you laughed
I heard you laugh
You laughed, you laughed
and laughed and then you left but
Now you know I’m utterly mad

And

They’re coming to take me away, ha-ha,
They’re coming to take me away, ho-ho,
hee hee, haa haa
To the happy home
With trees and flowers and chirping birds
And basket-weavers who sit and smile
And twiddle their thumbs and toes
And they’re coming to take me away, ha-hahaha...

I cooked your food, I cleaned your house,
And this is how you pay me back for
All my kind, unselfish, loving deeds,
Hah?
Well you just wait, they’ll find you yet
And when they do they’ll put you in the ASPCA you mangey mutt!

And

They’re coming to take me away, Ha-ha
They’re coming to take me away, Ho-ho
Hee-hee-haa-haa
To the funny farm
Where life is beautiful all the time
And I’ll be happy to see those
Nice young men in their clean white coats and
They’re coming to take me away, ha-ha!

To the happy home
With trees and flowers and chirping birds
And basket-weavers who sit and smile
And twiddle their thumbs and toes
And they’re coming to take me away, ha-hahaha...

Paging Mister Noah.

Seriously, water at that depth would be super-saturated, basically steam compressed so much it is a liquid. I’m not even sure if it could hold contaminants like metals or salts.

water-credits modeled on carbon credits? ‘investments’ aimed at farmers? now that’s a scary thought for food prices - and for farmers!

(from your article:)

“A water-related investment could potentially shield retailers from water-induced market fluctuations and protect against price hikes or from having to source too often from more expensive options, for example overseas. It will also reduce the need to over-contract, which is currently required to ensure that the quantity of produce demanded by our customers is delivered even when there is poor weather...”
