Weekly Thread Thread #1 6/17/2014
6/17/2014 | RG

Posted on 06/17/2014 12:41:01 PM PDT by Roos_Girl

Welcome to the FR weekly Thread Thread. With a thank you to meowmeow for the suggestion on the catchy name.

As I mentioned to some, I'm really a pre-novice seamstress. I'm even hesitant to use the word seamstress. But, with the little guy growing out of clothes SO quickly I figured I'd put some effort into making some of his play clothes. And with 2 years of being a stay at home mom, after 15 years as a professional civil engineer, my brain is in need of some exercise.

So I thought I'd start out by posting a couple of (bad) pictures of a previous project and then some info on what I'm starting on.

And in taking these pictures I see my son has managed to sneak his black crayon onto the back of this curtain. Sneaky little boys.

Here is a LINK to a free pattern for a simple ladies tank top that I thought I would try for myself.

This is a LINK to a free tutorial and downloadable pattern for purchase that I thought I'd try for Little Britches. I ordered fabric from Denver Fabrics online at $5/yd with 1 pair of shorts taking 3/4 of a yard in his size.

So, welcome to everyone. I'm super impressed and happy we have some men joining in. If anyone wants on or off the Thread Thread ping list just let me know. And please let's see pictures of your works in progress.

I would scourer the larger fabric outlets for heavy clearance upholstery type material. Just make sure you check on a dark night that not a single beam of light is escaping.

If you fly sky lanterns (aka fire balloons) you can see those for a very, very long ways away!

Great job on the curtains!

I was wondering... is there a good field guide to edible wild plants that anyone would recommend?? Thanks!

Do you have this book? I read the reviews and it said it’s more for southwestern climates, I’m midwest. :)

Its really really dangerous to use a book to determine which plants are edible. Look for a class or someone locally who will take you out and show you which ones are safe. Many times the edible ones look very similar to poisonous ones.

Roos Girl, please add me to your Thread ping list. :-)

What sort of black out material did you use?

I have a window in my place that faces the street, and I dearly would love to be able to turn a light on in there in the evening and not have the nosy neighbors in there with me!

My wife owns a customer window treatment business.

Just go to a JoAnn’s Fabrics or similar and get blackout lining. Pretty cheap; more so than ANY upholstery fabric.

Consider using two layers, but NOT sown together; just hung one in front of the other.

EVERY pinprick lets light through, so no seams in the window area or light will leak in/out.

I told you the Japanese were weird. It was that way on the pattern. That's one thing that will get fixed. ;)

This is the material I used. It's 100% blackout and I'm pretty pleased with the material.

Haha, a sewer, yes! That’s where most of my attempts at sewing should have gone.

Thank you, I like that it is also a sound dampener.
