My wife is going to Bangkok in August for work. She has 4 free days to spend touring. She's interested in going to Cambodia or Vietnam. What would you recommend that's unique and doable in a short time?

With the events going on in the world, I would be surprised if she went to Bangkok in August.
The world is about to catch fire. Acts of Muslim violence will not be limited to the middle east. I believe that something dramatic is going to happen and soon. Primarily because no one is poised to stop it.

I have been to Vietnam. At this time of year, Vietnam and Cambodia is pretty hot and humid. It can be very hard to deal with. She could visit Ho chi Minh City, but there is not that much to see. The food is awesome. She could visit Hue, the imperial capital. That is a nice destination for 4 days. I have never been to Cambodia, but she has to check with her physician about vaccinations. Malaria is prevalent there. Personally, I would head for a Thai beach resort and relax those 4 days.
More than enough in Bangkok to keep her busy. I did a bike tour in the country outside of Bangkok that was awesome. Ko Samui and Phuket are great destinations. For Cambodia, she could go to Siem Reap to see the Angkor Wat. I haven’t been but I hear Chiang Mai is really nice (plus it should be cooler as it is in the mountains up North).
Taiwan is great.
Four days?
You cant get enough to see in Bangkok, alone, in 4 days!
Believe me, I was around there for over 2 years, and
didnt do it all.
With only 4 days she should just stay in Bangkok unless she has already been there. 4 days isn't even enough to begin to see all there is in and around Bangkok, let alone any other parts of Thailand. If she wants to go to Cambodia, Vietnam, etc, she should do it on a separate trip and take advantage of her 4 days this time to explore BKK.
There was just a bloodless coup in Thailand and things are quite peaceful right now (previously there had been massive protests and the threat of further strife before the military stepped in at the end of May). The coup has been relatively popular (especially in Bangkok and south), the Thai government is trying very hard to lure tourists back, and August is low season so she should be able to get around easily.

Thailand is a terrific destination and anyone can have a great trip there now and almost certainly in August too. It's not the most ideal time weather wise, but it will still be fine on that front as well. Islamic radical violence is almost exclusively contained in the southernmost 3 provinces and unlikely to move out of that area, she would be nowhere near any danger.
Bangkok is a wonderful city to visit. It's much less wonderful once you've lived there and seen beneath the surface, but for a tourist it is a terrific destination.
It sounds from the two descriptions, that Cambodia is easier than Vietnam.
I am not criticising Cambodia in this next part. I missed visiting there last time, because I was too sleepy and ended up staying in Thailand.
However I know that Cambodia is (at least was a couple of years ago) much less safe than Thailand.
(no information on Vietnam in that regard)
I would say she should probably stay in Thailand. In four days she won’t have anywhere near enough time to even scratch the surface there.

I agree. I was stationed there for nearly 2 years and still didn't manage to see everything worth seeing. She should check with a tourist agency and see what guided tours are available. In my experience (Thailand, Taiwan, Turkey, just to list the T's), a good travel agency is worth the money.
You are right. SE Asia is probably the safest area in the world. It’s not like any major airliners have crashed or gone missing in that part of the world lately.
